RELIGIOUS SERVICES. MARANATHA (i.e., Uur Lord Jesus Christ is Coming). CHRIST OR CHAOS? YVE purposed writing this message for ’’ last Saturday’s paper, but the sudden and unexpected home-call of a relative and loved member of our household prevented. We desire now for the praise and glory of God to show that He and He alone is the Supreme Factor that has made Britain the acknowledged ruler of the waves these three to four centuries. It is because that there is so much denial and so little public acknowledgment nowadays that to God and to Him alone, should be the praise for Britain’s hegemony of the nations, that we feel constrained to sound forth this word for the honour and glory of the God we adore. First of all, God has given our nation in a very full and real sense His Son Jesus Christ the Living Word, and with Him also blessed us with the Written Word, which we call the Bible. Those who have carefully studied the Book know that everyone who is a Christian has not in the first instance chosen Christ but- God has first chosen us and revealed His Son in us. So that we can truly say God has given us Christ the Rock of the Ages: and the precious Book which liveth and abideth for ever. With Christ and the Book is included “One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism, and One God and Father of All, who is above all, and IN YOU ALL.” Now what is Faith? The best answer we know is “Light from Heaven.” The Apostle Paul’s conversion is typical of all others, he was arrested by “a bright Light from Heaven.” Now as to Baptism (of which immersion in the waters is the outward and visible sign); this is that mysterious operation by which a Christian’s body becomes “a temple of the Holy Spirit.” It is through this that the Apostle Paul makes use of that remarkable expression concerning Christians of their being “IN CHRIST.” Did you ever hear of the disciples of Mahomet or of Confucius . being “in Mahomet,” or “in Confucius”? Every properly instructed Christian kn*ws that to be “IN CHRIST” means that the Holy Spirit has entered his being. That man or that woman has been “born again,” born of the Spirit and made a new creation in Christ. Reader, do you know that you have been “born again.” Born of the water of the Word (the Bible), and of the Holy Spirit? We beg of you do not rest till you do. We shall stop here. We , know that if wo exceed seven or eight inches of typo it may not be read. We shall show next week, God willing, that the greatest and proudest institutions of our Empire have been God-given. With Christ as God’s great gift He has bestowed upon us four others. First, the Authorised Version of the Holy Scriptures, a mighty gift, indeed! Next the State Church, and with it an even better gift, the' British Sunday established by law. Thirdly, the British Bible and Missionary Societies, and we should couple with these our hospitals and Red Cross societies. Fourthly, the English Constitution, with its Code, the Monarchy, Parliaments, and Courts of Justice, all founded upon the Rock of the Ages. Many may sneer at this; but let them. Our great fathers placed over the portals of the mightiest financial institution the world has ever known the inscription, “The earth is the Lord’s and the fulness thereof.” It makes us tired when we hear of some learned duffer writing as if Britain and the Empire just came into existence, and like Topsy, “it growed.” A thousand times ' No! To God be the glory! Alas for 1 Ominous signs that there seems to be a cracking. God has raised up this nation to witness and glorify Him ; and it is failing Him. Our hope is that Christ may 1 soon come. It has ever been Christ or Chaos? - i BUSINESS NOTICES. TyUTTON Bird, Oil is nature’s simple .
