RABBITS NOT DESTROYED

FARMER FINED £lO. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Waipukurau, April 19. A farmer, Donald McLeod, owning 1901 acres at Porangahau, was charged before the Magistrate (Mr. Mowlem) to-day, on the information of the Hawke’s Bay Rabbit Board, with failing to take adequate steps to cope with the destruction of rabbits. The defence was that poisoning and other methods had been employed, but that the rabbits came from surrounding properties. The Magistrate said it did not matter from where the rabbits came. The onus was on the defendant to take reasonable steps to prevent them. The law governing the matter could not be flouted. Any breaches must be treated seriously in view of the depredation and heavy losses caused by rabbits in other parts of the Dominion. McLeod was convicted and fined £lO.
