PRIVATE AND MUNICIPAL TRADING

..UNFAIR TAXATION y \ '' _ ■ . ■ Reference to the taxation imposed upon the Income of companies as compared .with the Immunity enjoyed by municipal and other local bodies was made yesterday by Mr. E. Windley, chairman of the Makara County Council, at the ceremony in connection with the turning on of the gas supply for Johnsonville and Makara. Mr. Windley contended, that it was unfair to the private companies and also to public companies, such as gas and electric companies, that they should be called upon to contribute substantially to the national revenue whilst similar trading concerns competing against them and owned by local bodies escaped taxation. “It is not, in the interests of progress, arid the sooner the anomaly is removed the better,” declared Mr. Windley.
