CRUELTY TO ANIMALS
Sir,—ln reply to “Humanity Martin’s” lettrt-, published on March 1, on drastic measures being taken to stamp out cruelly to animals, I am of the same opinion. "I represent here in Marton the Wanganui branch of the S.P.C.A., and the cases I attend are fearful, and are mostly met with a fine of £l. The S.P.C.A. branches held a conference this week, and the remit I sent in was that the maximum fine be raised to £lOO, or 12 months’ imprisonment. What is the matter with the people »f New Zealand? Are they merely thoughtless or purely selfish-that they do Hot contribute something—no matter how small—to these societies, which are m nearly every town. So much might be done but without funds very little. Every day .' we read in the papers that large sums of money have been left to this dr that, but very little, if ever, to our cruelty to animal funds. Wake up, New Zealand! and show that we are intelligent beings, with a little of the milk of human kindness in our hearts for our (not dumb) friends. —I am, etc., MADELINE INNES, Member Executive S.P.C.A. Marton, March 1.
