NEW YEAR HONOURS
BRITISH RECIPIENTS UNUSUAL NUMBER OF WOMEN IN LIST THREE PEERAGES GRANTED (British Official Wireless.) Rugby, February 28. The list of honours usually conferred at New Year, but which was postponed this -year on account of the King’s ilness, is now issued. Peerages are conferred on the following:— Sir Jesse Boot, of the well-known firm of chemists, for services in the promotion of education. Mr. Urban Huttleston Rogers Broughton, in consideration of the public, political and philanthropic services of his father, the late Urban Hanlon Broughton, whose election to the peerage would have been recommended to His Majesty but for his death on January 30 last. The late Urban Hanlon Broughton was the well-known British engineer, and was engaged for many years in engineering, mining, and railway work in the United States, becoming president of various big companies. Sir Berkeley Moynihan, president 'if Royal College of Surgeons. Nine recipients of baronetcies include Mr. Friedrick Eckstein, chairman of the Sudan planations syndicate, for services to the Sudan; Mr. William Horne, chairman of tlie Prudential Assurance Company; Mr. Alexander Park Lyle, chairman of the Lyle Shipping Company, for services in connection with the Scottish National War Memorial; and Mr. William Morris, chairman of Morris Motors.
Thirty new knights are appointed, mostly for political and public services. They include Mr. H. V. Roe, for distinguished services to British, aviation.
Among other honours are the following :—
Order of the Bath, Military Division : Knights Grand Cross —Admiral Sir Osmond de Brock. General Sir Walter Braithwaite, and General Sir John Shea, General Officer Commanding in the Chief Eastern Command, India.
Order of the Star of India: Knight Grand Commander—Sir Leslie Wilson, late Governor of Bombay. The Most Eminent Order of the British Empire: Knight Grand Commander —His Highness the Maharaja Sir Hari Singh. Order of Saint Michael and Saint George: Knights Grand Cross—Briga-dier-General Sir Samuel Wilson, Permanent Under-Secretary for the Colonies ; anti Sir George Clark. Ambassador at Constantinople: Knights Commanders—Sir Ronald Storrs. Governor of Cyprus; Mr. Robert Greg, Minister at Bucharest; and Mr. Howard Kennard, Minister at Belgrade. Order of the British Empire: Knights Grand Cross—Air Vice-Marshal Sir Philip Game and Sir Henry Dobbs, High Commissioner of Iraq. Dame Grand Cross—Mrs. Alfred Lyttelton. The Dames Commanders include Mrs Laura Knight, Associate of the Royal Academy; Professor Anne Mcllroy. Professor of Obstetrics at the Royal Free Hospital. Knight Commander— Mr. John Pratt, one of the ConsulsGeneral in China. The Commanders include Professor Winifred Culiis, Professor of Physiology at tlie Royal Free Hospital. Companions of Honour— Lady Bargett, Dean of the London School of Medicine for Women; Miss Lilian Baylis, lesse and manager of the Old Vic Theatre, and Frederick Delius, the blind composer. Knight Bachelor. —Professor Augusto Bartolo. Labour Minister of Malta. ' Grand Cross of the Indian Empire.— Colonel Sir Hari Singh, Maharajah of Kashmir. HONOURS FOR AUSTRALIANS Sydney, February 28. The deferred New Year Honours for Australians were announced as follow: The Hon. Frank Gavan Duffy, Justice of the High Court of Australia, to be K.C.M.G. Mr. C. L. Baillieu (Melbourne), and Dr. H. L. Cumpston, Director-General of the Commonwealth Health Department, both C.M.G. The Hon. Daniel Levy, Speaker of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly; Dr. Norman Kater, M.L.C., and Mr. George Julius, chairman of the Council of the Scientific and Industrial Research Bureau, each K.B.
