HOW TO REMEDY FAULTS. Squeaks.—Caused by lack of lubrication of moving parts or by loosened parts. Apply light engine oil to any joints showing traces of rust, particularly spring shackles, spring leaves, steering and speedometer connections, body joints, hood hinges and fastenings.
Rattles. —Caused by looseness of parts, particularly spring shackles, steering connections, hoods, fenders, spare tire supports, doors, top joints, clutch and brake connections, universal joints. Lubricate and tighten fastenings, using lockwashers wherever possible. Take up lost motion in working parts. Provide rubber or felt bumpers where possible. Hard Steering.—Results from lack of lubrication of steering gear connections, particularly steering knuckles, or by too close adjustment of steering gear. Lubricate all parts freely and have gear properly adjusted. Rapid Tire Wear. —Due to front wheels not in alignment. Tire quickly wears fiat on tread. Jack up front iixle, spin wheels, making chalk or pencil line on centre of tire treads. Measure distance between lines on tires at front and rear of wheels. Wheels should “toe in” about one-quarter of an inch, with no play in steering knuckle tie rod pins. See that tires are inflated to correct pressure. Clutch Engages Abruptly.—Cone clutch—-soak leather with neatsfoot oil and adjust facing springs. Disc clutch —have adjusted. Spider may be worn. Dragging Brakes. —Car lacks power. Test by jacking up axle and turning wheels. Adjust both top and bottom halves of brakes. Follow instruction book carefully. Broken Springs.—Keep spring clips tight.
