THE BRITISH GLORY
NEW TANKER FOR WELLINGTON
An interesting ship now on her way to Wellington is the tanker British Glory, which sailed from San Pedro, California, last Friday night with a full cargo of fuel oil for discharge into the Union Company’s tanks at Miramar. The British Glory, which has been chartered in place of the Norwegian tanker O. A. Knudsen, is due a t Wellington on March 19. Built by Sir J. Laing and Sons at Sunderland and launched in February, 1928, the British Glory is an up-to-date tanker of 6995 tons gross and 4165 tons net register, 435 feet in length, 57 feet in breadth, and 33.8 feet in depth. She is propelled by two sets of Doxford four-cylinder, two-stroke cycle, single acting Diesel engines, giving her a speed of about 11 knots. The British Glory is one of the big fleet of tankers operated by British Tankers, Ltd., of London. There are over 100 steamers and motor ships in the fleet, the list and particulars of which fill nearly seven pages of Lloyd's Register. Most of the ships, which have been built during the last four or five years, bear names with the prefix British.
