NEW ZEALAND MEAT
FINE FOR RETAILING ANOTHER BRAND
The following statement concerning wrongful retailing of meat in New Zealand has been issued by the Meat Producers’ Board: — "A few months ago a Press Association cablegram from London announced that the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board had successfully prosecuted a butcher at Ashton-under-Lyne for selling South American meat as New Zealand. From information supplied to the Board by its London manager, the facts of this case are that a representative of the Board was supplied with Chilean lamb in place of the New Zealand meat for which he asked. In fining the defendant £l3 13s. costs, the Magistrate issued a warning that, in future, shopkeepers, and especially butchers, should be careful to serve exactly what they were asked for.
“Following upon this successful prosecution, the Board is now informed by cable from its London manager that he has secured a conviction of a butcher firm in Plymouth for the same offence. The fine on this occasion was ffi with £lO costs. “The Board, through its London manager. has for some time past been keeping a vigilant look-ont for this kind of misrepresentation. and has investigated many cases of the wrongful retailing of inferior meat as ‘New Zealand.’ but. It has generally found upon investigation that it was impossible to obtain sufficient evidence to warrant a prosecution.
