UNFORTUNATE SPEECH

INDISCRETION OF HOME SECRETARY

(Australian Press Assn.—United Service.)

London, February 24. Contrasting the Duke of Montrose's remark that Edinburgh Scots have the right to manage their own domestic affairs, is Sir William Joynson-Hicks’s statement at Oxford that “people must realise that the old days of every man’s right to do as he likes with his own won’t work in the twentieth century.” The “Star” declares that Conservative members of Parliament resent this, and. assert'that it will mean thatthousands of votes will be lost to the Conservatives because Sir William Joynson-Hicks is championing bureaucratic control, hitherto advocated only by Socialists. It is feared that numerous Government supporters will transfer their allegiance to the Liberals. The speech also entails more Cabinet trouble.
