Alan Butcher, aged twenty years, was bathing with four others at Marouba this afternoon, when he was attacked by a shark, which tore the flesh from his side and buttocks. He cried for help, and his companions and a timely wave brought him safely to shore. ,He Is suffering from shock and loss of blood. A serious example of the ferociousness of the sharks this year was witnessed to-day. Three monsters, iff Deewhy,, six miles north of Sydney, came within ten feet of the beach and greedily snapped pieces of flesh out of a whale which was stranded on the foreshore and was tethered waiting transference to the zoological gardens. A resourceful fisherman caught one )f the sharks, which was placed in a canvas tank and taken to the zoo.
