THE MOTU ROAD

A WARNING TO MOTORISTS Mr. J. Creeke, superintendent of the Wellington Fire-Brigade, has returned from an extensive motor tour of the North Island. He warns motorists who contemplated similar tour, not to attempt the Gisborne-Motu-Opotoki road, which is in a very bad state at present, owing, chiefly, to the formation work which is being carried out. Corners are being rounded off, and the road widened in certain places, and roughmetalled. He had a tire cut to pieces on this road, and generally speaking, it was by no means a pleasurable drive. When the present work is completed, he anticipates that this road will be one of the most picturesque drives through virgin country in the Dominion.

Whilst traversing the Motu-Opotiki road, Mr. Creeke met a service car at a particularly narrow place. He got as close to the bank as he could, and the service car attempted to pass, but the outer wheels left the road, and the car. was left hanging over at an angle. He could not make the road again, bu Mr. Creeke was able to pass, and five miles-further on apprised the driver of another service car of the position. Both service drivers made light of the occurrence, and said they would soon pull the car back on to the road. The roads in the Bay of Plenty,; from Opotoki on to Whakatane and Tauranga, were found to be firstrate,, and the weather was all that could be desired. At Whakatane, Mr. {•Creeke saw his parents, who are very old residents of that district.
