TRANSPORT POLICY
NOT TO FORCE USE OF RAILS By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wanganui, February 13. The Hon. W. A. Veitch was asked today by a “Herald” reporter about his new portfolio of Minister of Transport. The Minister replied that he was not going to be so foolish as to proclaim a complete policy and a system of organisation at that stage. Already misconceptions had arisen as to what the creation of the new portfolio of Transport implied, some having the impression that it .was to be in the nature of a struggle for existence on the system of pull-devil, pull-baker as between the railway and the motor transport services. As a matter of fact, the foremost feature of his work would be exactly in the opposite direction. It was not intended to continue the effort to force traffic on to the rails. By the application of goodwill and common-sense, and without compulsion or unnecessary interference with the rights of the people, he believed it was possible to correlate motor traffic with the railways so that both may serve the people better.
