Fire swept about 100 acres of gorse and scrub at Purewa the other afternoon (states the “New Zealand Herald”). Fears were entertained for a time for the safety of the workmen’s huts at Purewa camp. Scores of people in Auckland saw the volumes of dense. smoke arising from the fire, and approximately 300 motorists watched the fire from the roads bounding the burning area. With the object of burning some gorse near the cemetery a fire was started and, fanned by the steady breeze, the flames spread until they had covered a wide field. No damage was caused to pronertv. . .
