MEETING OF GAS LIGHTING BOARD.

A meeting of the Petone and Lower Hutt Gas Lighting Board was held last night. There were present: The chairman (Mr. W. G. Lodder), Messrs. W. T. Strand, V. E. Jacobsop, S. Clendon, W. G. Meldrum, C. P. Brocklebank, and E. TOe gas manager (Mr. H. Appleyard) reported that for the month of January 578 tons of coal were carbonised, and 8,129,000 cubic feet of gas were manufactured, the average amount manufactured per ton being 14,064 cubic feet. The increased manufacture over January, 1928, was 494,300 cubic feet, and the average calorific value being 494 British thermal units. Coal in stock on February 1 totalled 228 tons llcwt. 2qrs. The estimated aniount of coke in stock on February 1 was 8 tons, and the estimated amount of tar, in the same date, 4000 gallons. Sixty-one chains of mains were laid during January. Forty-six new services were installed in the Valley, 53 cookers, 9 coppers. 6 caliphonts, 3 hot plates, and 3 gas fires.
