The world’s shipbuilding returns for last year, now issued by Lloyd's Register, show that Great Britain and Ireland together continue to produce more than all the; other countries to the world combined. The output of the. British and Irish shipyards was 1,445,920 tons, which was an increase of 220,000 tons on the preceding • year, compared with 1,253,319 tons, an increase of 194,000 tons built elsewhere. Thus the British and Irish shipyards produced. 53.6 per cent, of the world's output,, which is precisely the same percentage as in 1927. Among British yards, the Clyde alone launched 572,000 tons pf the shipping under construction to British yards for owners abroad. The production of the other principal shlp-bulldipg countries was as follows: —Germany, 377,000 tons; Holland, 177,000 tons; Denmark, 139.000 tons; Sweden, 107,000 tons; Japan, 104,000 tons; the United States, 92.000 tons. » Nearly 44 per cent of the world's tonnage launched consisted of motorvessels. Mr. John Barr, former presl dent of the Shipping Employers’ Federation, yesterday expressed the opln ion that British shipbuilding is better than' it had been for years.
