BYRD ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION

FOURTEEN NEW MOUNTAIN PEAKS DISCOVERED Dominion Special Service. Auckland, February 5. The discovery of fourteen hitherto unknown mountain peaks in the Antarctic is reported by Commander* Richard Byrd in a wireless message received to-day by Mr. R. G. Brophy, second in command of the expedition, who is in The wireless message stated: “Discovered 14 new mountain peaks on. the flight yesterday (Monday).” The discovery of such a large number of montains seems to indicate that an entire new mountain range has been' found. It is not likely that fuller particulars will be received in Auckland for several days. A further message from the expedition states the Eleanor Bolling was to leave this' morning, and will probably arrive at Dunedin on February 15. Mr. Brophy will leave for Dunedin on Sunday evening to supervise the loading of the Eleanor Bolling, which will sail on the return journey to the Antarctic on February 17, Mr. Brophy will then return to Auckland. Mr. Brophy has received an invitation from the Auckland Harbour Board to bring the Eleanor Bolling and the City of New York to Auckland when they arrive to winter in the Dominion. He is inclined to consider the proposal favourably on account of the better climate. Even if the* ships were moved here the major supply base would be left at Dunedin.
