INRUSH OF WATER IN MINE
TROUBLE AT HIKURANGI Dominion Special Service. Auckland, January 31. “Recent news from the mine is rather disturbing,” said the chairman of directors of the Hikurangi Coal Company, at the annual meeting to-day. “On Monday morning last, at 9 a.m., we were iu communication with the mine, when everything wtts going satisfactorily, and at 11 o'clock on the same day we received a telegram, stating that ti sudden and great inrush of water came iu so rapidly that one pump and motor was soon covered. The inrush was no doubt caused by striking an underground spring or a large pocket of water. We had a similar inrush about the same time last year, which caused a stoppage of work in that portion of the mine, and it was three months before the flow’ of water was intercepted. On Tuesday last the water was being held, but yesterday it was again beating the pumps. The latest news from the mine this morning is that the water is gaining in the heading 2ft. per hour, and that it will take two months before" the water is clear. The output of coal from the mine will not be seriously affected, as the manager reports that with three shifts now employed, he anticipates little difficulty ii. keeping up the present output.”
