THE RACING WORLD
FIRST DAY AT EGMONT CHIEF EVENT WON BY YOM A NOLAN CUP TO LLANORE (By Telegraph.—From “The Watcher.”) Hawera, January 31. Th. Summer meeting of the Egmunt ICmtag Club opened at Hawera May in Hue but snltry weather. The attendance we. laM to track fast. Yoma scored a popular win in the Egmont Cup, Hynanna and Bright Glow, and in the Flying Handicap Lady Quex won X Keddar and Reremoana. The Nolan Gold Cup for hacks « by Llanore, the win of Mr. A. Alexander being very xvell received. Home Made was second and Gold Cure third. . The totalisator business was about on a par with the same <y last year, being £22,358 10s., as against £22,592, a decrease of £234 10 8 .
An inquiry into interference, with Rapine by Yoma nearing the finish of the Cup saw no action taken, Reed stating that Rapine was edging out to meet Yoma and was just as responsible for the interference as the winner. An inquiry into interference by Rereinoana in the Flying Handicap found that it was caused by Whenuanui getting on the heels of the leader, Lady Quex, and coming back on to Reremoana. A feature of the day’s racing was tne success of No. son the card. It won five races and was twice second. m eight starts, a sovereign invested on No. 5 in each start would have shown a profit of £24 13s. OHAWE HURDLES. Glengariff, who was favourite for the hurdles, had every chance, being first over the last fence, but he was well beaten into fifth place. The running was made by Asleep and Abbot s Delight from Atareria, Royal Acre, Puwhero, Vivo, Glengariff, and Vexatious. Vivo ran up at the half and pointed the leadon the bend, where Glengariff and Vexatious also came forward. Glengariff was first over the last fence, but Vexatious came on and won easily by two lengths from Polyphemus, who beat Royal Acre by a head. Atareria was a moderate fourth, then Glengariff and Vivo. The early leaders all stopped, the place- o etters finishing all over them. Royal Acre’s jockey showed extremely incompetent horsemanship, and was most unlucky. Another unlucky runner was Puwhero, who got badly stopped on the turn when in a handy position. JUVENILE HANDICAP.
The three-year-old, Callapat, who is now trained by his owner, won the Juvenile Handicap decisively. He was not the best of them, but he, soon ran to the front and was never caught, paying a good price considering his recent form. When Callapat settled down in the lead he was attended by Banket, Tenacre, Endorse, High Disdain, and Valpre. Once in a line, Banket set after Callapat, but the latter hung on and won by a length. Tenacre was a similar distance away, and then came High Disdain, Endorse, Potency, and Valpre. Nothing had any chance with the winner, though Tenacre was unlucky on the turn. High Disdain, who had not raced since he won the Cloverlea Nursery on the second day at Awapuni last April, should be improved. Endorse was only fair, and Valpre, a solid favourite, was never dangerous.
TOKAORA HANDICAP. The public picked the hack sprint well, the solid favourite, Knightlike, winning from the second choice, Havering. Warflame and Miss Ransom began best, and joined down the back by Airway, led to the turn from Knightlike, Second Thought, and Havering, the bunch being beaten by Fortalice. Warflame led into the straight, but Havering, on the outer, and Knlghtllke, on the rails, were going best. Havering was looking the most dangerous half a furlong off the post, but he weakened over the last bit, and Knightlike won by-three-quarters of a length, Havering beating Fortalice, who came fast, by a head. Blone was fourth, then Second Thought, Ngawhine, Joke Form, and Airway. Knightlike won well and appears to be racing more solidly. Havering ran well, just weakening over the concluding stages. Fortalice, Blone, Ngawhine, and Joke Form all came from the back, but Second Thought, Airway, and Miss Ransom and Warflame had every chance. EGMONT CUP. Talisker (11.40 a.m.), was scratched for the Cup, the stable relying upon Vertigern, who was made a ££33 oetter favourite than Bright Glow. Yoma, lying last till just on two furlongs from home, showed just how good he was to-day, by then putting in his run and winning going away. When the field settled down, Star Area and Blimp led from Mendip and Bright Glow, then Vertigern and Rapier, and then Hynanna and Yoma. There was no change till the turn, when they had closed up on the leaders, and Hynanna put In a run on the outer. As they came Into line, Star Area was just ahead of Bright Glow and Hynanna, with Blimp and Mendip dropping back, Vertigern and Rapine being next. When well in line Hynanna had Star Area and Bright Glow settled, but Yoma started up with a fine run and beat Hynanna cleverly by a long neck, a similar distance separating Hynanna and Bright Glow. Vertigern was a length back, then Star Area, Mendip and Rapine, with Blimp beaten off. Yoma came in on Rapine in the straight, but for which the Martian veteran may have been closer. At any rate Rapine should be better than at Wellington. Vertigern failed with his weight and had every chance. Hynanna has distinctly returned to form, and would probably have won. It was a bad error of judgment on Mackie’s part to sweep round everything from last on the turn. Yorha won through waiting a little longer, and so had to cover less ground. Considering his recent form and ability to- stay, Yoma paid a remarkably good price. Bright Glow pulled very hard for a long way in the early stages, and just failed to see it out. Star Area, Mendip, and Blimp were outclassed, and failed to stay. Recent form has made it plain that Star Area stole the Manawatu Cup. It looks as if Vertigern was lucky to score in Wellington. FLYING HANDICAP. Only six started in the Flying Handicap, and naturally Reremoana was at a very short price. The connections pt Lady Quex were very confident, and she was solidly supported, the result and the running fully bearing out their opinions. A perfect start saw them run in a buneh for half a furlong, when Keddar dropped back, Lady Quex taking up the running from Whenuanui. then came Reremoana. Te Atiawa. and Monaghan, bunched. Reremoana got badly stopped at the five furlongs, and dropped back, Lady Quex being clear across the top from Whenuanui, Te Atiawa. Monaghan. Reremoana, and Keddar. Lady Quex turned for home from Whenuanui, with Reremoana and Keddar moving up. Lady Quex came on and won by half a length from Keddar. who beat Reremoana by two lengths. Whenuanui was a length further back, while Monaghan was four or five lengths away, with Te Atiawa beaten/off. Lady Quex was too brilliant under her licht weight. Reremoana was beaten at the top of the straight. The interference lost ijim some ground, but it did not look as it it made much difference to the placings. for Keddar came from behind him to get second. Keddar’s performance was distinctly good. Whenuanui ran a good race. Scratchings were: Benzora (11
a.m.), Joy King (11.35 a.m.), Banket (11.40 a.m.), Nasstori (1 p.m.). NOLAN GOLD CUP. Llanore, hitting the front out of the straight in the Hack Cup, slowed the field down, and then was able to sprint them home. With Llanore out of the straight were Gold Dawn, Boundary ,and Gold Cure, but Boundary got on the heels of the horse in front, and sent back the others, notably Acred. When well in the back stretch Whlsogne had rushed up and taken charge from Llanore, Onward, Gold Dawn, and Gold Cure, the bunch being headed by Boundary and Llmosa, Gasnapper, Spearmiss, and Thurnbell bringing up the rear. Home-Made moved forward approaching the half, and the order on the turn was Whlsogne from Llanore, Onward, Boundary, Gold Dawn, Gold Cure and Home-Made. In the straight Llanore shot ahead, while Gold Dawn got stopped, Llanore winning by two lengths from Home-Made, who beat Gold Lure bj a long neck. Gasnapper was fourth, then Gold Dawn, Onward, Whlsogne, and L pace early showed the winner, although she won well, and may have done so in any case. As the race was run Gold Dawn looked very unlucky to get beaten. G. Morris took the risk on the inner in the straight and got stopped. Gold Cure got stopped also about the same time, but not to the same extent. Roi de Vai was scratched at 10.40 a.m. WHABEKOA HANDICAP. If King Midas had got an opening in the Whareroa Handicap he would have won. As It was he did not get ago until too late, and then had to put up with a dead-heat for second place with Manly, both minor dividends being less than the Investments. When settled down, Manly made the running from Nucleus, then Seastar and Paul Lucerne, King Midas being next with Bonliomme. There was no change to. the straight, where Nucleus challenged Manly. A little later King Midas joined the pair, but he hung In badly, and B H. Morris had to stop riding twice. This cost him the race, Nticleus winning bv a neck, King Midas and Manly crossing the line together. Orazone was a moderate fourth, and then came Bonhomme and Sea Star. > WAIPAJ’A HANDICAP. Coolmint, who was favourite for the concluding event, got out first, settled down behind the leaders, and then came again in the straight to win easy. When Coolmint surrendered the lead the running was made by Green Acre from Airtight, Monsogne, and Miss Mercia. was no change to the straight, except that Vaucluse, who had got left 12 to L* lengths made up ground at; the> half, only to drop out again. Green Acre led into the straight, but Coolmint then moved up, and going on won by a length from Calamine, who beat, Miss Mercia by a neck. Green Acre was fourth, with Airtight next. ELLERSLIE TRACK WORK / . ■ Dominion Special Service. Auckland, January 30. There has been little doing on the tracks since Takapuna, as most’ of the horses have had plenty of racing. The Marble Arch —Miss Pauline gelding in P. Conway's stable cleared a couple of pony hurdles to-daj' In promising style. Bizarro, who has had a little experience, also performed well over two big hurdles. Sir Russell has left Mark Ryan’s stable, and will in future be trained by J. Wallace at Te Arolia. He is in splendid condition to go on racing. George Paul leaves for Wellington tonight to pick up Aussie and' Papatu and take them on to Dunedin. Wiggins will go south to. ride Papatu. Norval Tea is another to leave Ellerslie, and H. Eva Is likely to train her at Paeroa In future. Up to date she has shown little promise. Jolly Money and Vallar both won impressively at Takapuna, and they are both good horses that will carry on and improve. Gold Money Is another fine galloper that emerged from the hacks at Takapuna. A pleasing feature of her display on Tuesday was her quietness at the barrier. She has only to begin in the same manner in future to win plenty of races in open company. T. George has Baby Bun getting near her best. After she has had a run she should show to advantage on the country circuit. ' LAUNCESTON CUP By Telegraph.—Press Association. Hobart, January 31. The South Island owner has also sent the Solferino—Marsa yearling filly to New. The half-brother to Nightmarch is a very attractive fillv. She will not be hurried in any way. The South Island owner recently raced Solrose, who met with an accident just when coming to her best. Mr. Douglas’s team will be in charge of Mr. C. E. Robertson while they remain in the North Island.
NOTES FROM RICCARTON KENTISH LADY CHANGES HANDS Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, January 31. Conditions were again favourable for training operations at Kiccarton this morning, and some interesting fast work was executed on the plough, which, with one exception, was in use throughout the morning. Honour and Jaleux did some easy pace work, with a short sprint along the back. The fact that the former, is being kept in work indicates hat a change of plans lias been made, and there is every likelihood of the youngster being sent to Sydney for the Randwick autumn meeting. He is engaged in the A.J.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes and the Champagne Stakes, worth close on £5OOO and over £3OOO to the winner respectively. and these alone offer sufficient inducement to make the trip-with the speedy two-year-old. Martian Spear, by Greyspear from Ada Merling, who has not sported silk since his visit to the West Coast over twelve months ago was given a useful six-fur-long task, taking Imin. 19sec. This five-year-old gelding has not had a strenuous life, and being a galloper of no mean order he should be heard of in the near future. Silver Coot was under restraint in a six-furlong gallop, and Louise was subjected to similar work. Paperchase, with A. Eastwood in the sadde, showed a return to track form by reeling off six furlongs in Imin. 16sec., the last five in Imin. 2 2-ssec. She carried out her task in an easy manner, and her future efforts bear a promising outlook. She is engaged in the Publicans Handicap at Dunedin, and although she mav be at a disadvantage owing to not having had a race since the Stewards Handicap, she should be a likely-pro-position with 8.5. , , , . Lancer and Wrigley were assoc ated in a working gallop over six furlongs in Imin. iflsec The former is in the Autumn Hurdle Handicap at Dunedin with a handy weight, and if West Coast form can be taken as a guide, he should do well at the meeting. Wrigley Is a six-year-old gelding in Nurse’s stable by Greyspear from the Martian mare, Foil, and has only been raced on one occasion—at the Banks’ Peninsula meeting in October last. He has a lot of size and may later be tried as a jumper. , . Twang, accompanied by Paper Boy tor three furlongs, covered six furlongs m Imin. 18 2-ssec. The former, a maiden three-year by Archery from Ena, dam of John Bradbury, will accompany Silver Coot to the Dunedin meeting. He was purchased as a yearling by Mr. G. Gerard for 375 guineas, and was not asked to race until October last, when he unsuccessfully contested the Trial. Stakes at Motukarara. Starshooter went pleasingly over six furlongs in Imin. 18 3-ssec. Rotor was responsible for an attractive mile gallop executed in Imin. 43sec. He has fully recovered from the jarred joint he suffered from at Trentham. and is booked to contest the Dunedin Cup. Rapier and Nincompoop finished together after accomplishing a six-furlong task in Imin. 17 3-ssec. Rapier moved very freely throughout, while Nincompoop showed improvement on his previous S Foo’tfall was dispatched from the mile and a quarter post, and Chide joined him at six furlongs. Neither was ridden out, the full journey taking 2min. 15 3-ssec. The former has been asked to carry 8.13 in the Dunedin Cup, and although a likely starter, it is not thought he will be forward enough compared with the more seasoned opposition. Chide will not be a visitor to Wingatui, but will be reserved for the C..T.C. midsummer meeting, at which he will be eligible to contest the Trial Stakes. Stately strode over five furlongs in Imin. 3 4-ssec., Dutch Money’ covering the same ground in Imin. 3 2-s Sec. Francolin was allotted strong work, sprinting home three furlongs in 40sec. Sudden Storm finished better than Semper Paratus, after sprinting three furlongs in 36 3-ssec.' Pahautanui beat Greyfiuch over six furlongs on the grass, run in Imin. 17 4-ssee. Beau Geste and Solgate did useful work over five furlongs, taking Imin. 7 2-ssec. Limerick (A. Eastwood) and Paquito were dispatched together from the sixfurlong post, and Toawai joined in after a furlong had been covered. Paquito dropped out at the half-mile, and the other pair finished abreast in the good time of Imin. 15 3-ssec., the last four furlongs ttaking 50sec., an’d five furlongs Imb). 3 2-ssec. Limerick gave Toawai a clear start when picking him up, but collared him in the run to the post and finished very strongly. It was a pleasing piece of work on the part of the champion, while Toawal’s effort was also impressive. Desert Song and Comlque were not extended to gallop five furlongs in Imin. 4 3-ssec. Star Stranger 11, who is now stationed in J. W. Jennings’s stable, was going better than Skyquest and Solt'ello at the end of half a mile, occupying 51 3-ssec. The three-year-old filly Kentish Lady, by Tonbridge from the Maniopoto—Lady Lucy mare, Warstar, has been purchased from Mr. F. Kettlewell, of Johnsonville, by Mr. E. M. Sheedy, of Christchurch, and has entered J. B. Pearson’s stable at Riccarton.- Kentish Lady started six times last season without securing a place, end this term has contested eight races, her best performance being a second placing to Tenacre in the Nursery Handicap on the concluding day of the recent Foxton meeting. Childsplay has been in a bad way since returning from the Wellington meeting, and it is feared that some time will elapse before she will again be seen in public. Among the untried two-year-olds that have been brought down to Trentham for educative purposes is a very attractive and particularly well-grown youngster in the bay gelding Relation, which is sired by Chief Ruler from Imagination. Relation, a two-year-old of exceptional disposition, is a half-brother to that high-class horse, Suggestion, who unfortunately was galloped on when enjoying a most successful run in his third year on the turf. Imagination is by Birkenhead from Culmination, by San Francisco from Stepfeldt. It is not improbable that Chief Ruler may have in this two-year-old one of the most likely Derby horses ’ among the many good two-year-olds representing him this year, and, if Relation continues on as anticipated, his owner and breeder, Mr. W. E. Bldwill, of Rototawai, may have the pleasure of producing another high-class from the family which has already given him Reputation, and no many "other high-class horses.
