A CRUEL ACTION

DOG DRAGGED BEHIND MOTOR-CYCLE By Telegraph. —Press Association. Dunedin, January 28. At the Magistrate’s Court, David John Clark was fined £8 and costs, ini default fourteen days’ imprisonment, for cruelly ill-treating a dog. Counsel said accused had tied a collie dog on a chain about six feet long at Wylie’s Crossing. He then attached it to his motor-cycle, and drove to Mosgiel. The dog could not keep up with the speed of the motor-cycle, and the pads were torn off its fore feet. The dog subsequently died. The animal must have been tossed about badly in trying to get on its feet, as its soles were actually torn off. The Magistrate, in inflicting the fine, said that it was only after considerable hesitation that he had decided not to send the accused tfl gaol. The only fit punishment was for the accused to be dragged behind a motor-cycle for a few miles.
