TROTTING
WELLINGTON MEETING FORM OF UNHOPPLED i s TROTTERS ? - f 4 i(By “Overcheck.”) Bonny Belmont has yet to sport silk in the Dominion, and it is therefore difficult to assess his form. In relation to the other runners. Herbilwyn last season won one race and was placed third in another out of twelve attempts. His success was registered in the Victoria Handicap, of two miles, at Forbury in November, 1927, while his third was registered at Addington in February, when he ran third to Duke Bingen and Nourmahal, rechiving 24 yards from the former and starting on even terms with the latter. In this race he registered 3.29 1-5 from a 3.40 mark. This season he raced twice unsuccessfully at Forbury Park in November. Mutu has done practically all of his racing in the Auckland province, where he is well known. Last year he won one race at Otahuhu and was second on two other occasions. His best time for two miles was 4.39 2-5. This season he has started on five occasions, being placed second to Ngatlra at Otahuhu in November. Time, 4.44. Nelson Boy raced most consistently last year though he won only one race. This season he has won twice and been placed third on one occasion out of eight starts in one of which he was unlucky in that he sustained damage to his sulky. His best form has been shown at a mile and a half, and at Addington in November he won In 3.27 1-5, and was placed third in another race in which he registered 3.28. Katute has been a disappointment. Last year she failed to do better than run one second. This year she won her sixth race. This was at Addington in November, where for once she left the mark and trotted well, recording 3.27 4-5. If she could be induced to race solidly she would be a good racing proposition. Sarsaparilla is a greatly improved horse and Edwards has him in splendid order just now. In September he ran third at a mile and a half at Wellington, while at Addington in November he ran a second and a third, registering 3.2 G 3-5 and 3.24 3-5 respectively in these two races. His first winning performance this season was registered at New Brighton in December, when he did 4.45. At Addington this month he won the Stewards’ Handicap, of two miles, In 5.8 2-5 (heavy track), and was second to Nlghborn the following day. Time, 4.53 3-5. Duke Bingen has raced only four times this season, securing second to Eizear in the Sockburn Handicap at Addington in November, his time being 4.36. At Addington last February he won at a mile and a half In 3.25 1-5. Maxegin commenced the season in a very auspicious manner, winning a double at Addington. Both races were one mile and a half, and he registered 3.29 2-5 on a fast track and 3.35 1-5 on a heavy track. At Wellington in September he ran second at two miles. Returning to Addington in November he registered a third and a win, each race being two miles. When he won he went 4.35 3-5.
Tiger Salve has won three races this season, and has been four times unplaced. Each success was registered at Auckland In two-mlle races, his smartest time being 4.30 2-o. , Kempton won three races last season out of seven visits to the path, his smartest time at one and a-half miles being 3.31 4-5. This season he has already won a couple of races out of six attempts. He won at Addington in August in 4.34 3-5, while at Auckland last month he accounted for a good field in the Rowe Trotting Cup, in which he did 4.40 2-5 on a heavy track., Being now only a six-year-old he should be capable of still further improvement. • Sister Beatrice commenced the season ■well by winning at Addington in August, but she lowered her handicap materially for in that race she went 4.28 4-5. She has started seven times since, but has been outside the money on each occasion. However, those that have been heading her have all reached tighter marks, and so another winning turn for her may not be far off. She has no placed performances at 1} miles, but at Hawera in April she won at li miles In the good time of Eizear has raced very consistently this season, for she has only twice been outside of the money. At Addington in August she ran third in 4.29 4-5, but on the same course in November she won in 4.28 8-3, and was second in 4.28. At Auckland last month she was twice third. Her only placed performance at 1} miles was at Wellington last March, when she ran third in 3.30 3-5. However, 4.2 S for two miles works out at 3.21 for a mile and a-half.
Proud Ata has raced better this season than he did last, for at Forbury in December he won twice at two miles, his best time being 4.43. It must, however, be said that the fields he beat were poor ones. John Mauritius has raced once only this season. His last placed performance, which was also the fastest one, was registered at Forbury last January, when he went 4.36 1-5. Bonny Spec has raced four times for a win and a second, both of which were registered at Addington in August. In the race in which she was second she separated Tamerlane and Moneyspider, touching 4.31 1-5. Moneyspider’s record for the current season is one win and two thirds out of five outings. Notwithstanding his age he has registered faster times this season than ever before, for he ran 4.28 3-5 at Addington in August, and 4.27 1-5 on the same course in November. He took on the pacers at Canterbury Park on January 2, but was not in the picture at the finish.
