DOMINION BOWLS TOURNAMENT
CONTINUATION OF CHAMPIONSHIP PAIRS PLAY IN FINE WEATHER The Dominion Bowling Tournament was advanced a further r f stage yesterday, with the playing of the fourth and fifth rounds "of the championship pairs, and the first round of post-section play ’ in tjie. pairs championship, conducted on the knock-out system. There was,an unfortunate incident, when a competitor, having won a half section, defaulted, instead of playing off with the winner of the other half section. He contended that he was the *" winner of a section, and, therefore, had qualified for post-section ’.'play.' The conditions of play were almost ideal.
AC The" Dominion Dowling Association is --fortunate. So fair the tournament games have been carried ,out as scheduled, except that on one damp morning the rink games were reduced from 25 to 21 heads. On Monday" evening the fain set in and continued throughout the s evening and ,the outlook looked gloomy for yesterday, but after a cloudy early morning the sun 'blared'out bravely and continued-to shine -brightly throughout the day. 'Yesterday’splay consisted of the fourth and fifth rounds of section play and the first round of post-section play in the ’championship pairs. The greens were very keen, and despite a fresh breeze, which' teinpered the’heat of the.day pleas-antly,-the playing conditions were excellent. The above games will be played on the Hataitai green at 9 a.m. to-day, except in the case of three players who happen to be engaged in post-section rink play. On the Thorndon Club’s green the following games will be played : — Blair (V.8.A.) v. Hall (Carterton). Clark (West End) v. Bain (Levin). Martin (Hataitai) v. Buchan (Balraacewan). Reese (United) v. Fielding (Hataitai). Morton (Masterton) v. Sherwood, (Lyall Bay). West (Edgeware) v. Stephens (Kelburn). The above games are subject to the same conditions re players engaged in the rinks. • The following have drawn byes:— Laurenson (Linwood), Walker (Auckland), Franks (Masterton). Efford (Edgeware), McWhanliel (Hataitai).
A REGRETTABLE INCIDENT The only regrettable incident in connection with yesterday's play occurred at the conclusion of section play when Parsons (Ponsonby), who won Section Bl (really a half section), declined to play the winners and ties in Section B, on the grounds that he was a straight-out winner of a section. The law laid down by the association is very clear. In the conditions respecting the pairs it states: “The winners and ties in sections will play off on the sudden death principle.” As he forfeited the game by not playing, Parsons put himself out of the. contest. There were others in the same position as Parsons, but there was no other objection to the conditions laid down.
PRESIDENT’S DAY To-day is President's Day and will be celebrated at the Wellington Club's green. All bowlers are invited, to be present. Afternoon tea will be provided, and an orchestra will be in attendance. THE CHAMPIONSHIP RINKS The first round of the championship rinks will be played to-day on the Wellington Club’s greens, commencing at 9 a.m. The draw has already appeared in these columns. All play will be confined to the Wellington Club’s greens. NOTES AND COMMENTS Harrison (V.8.A.) explains (in reference to yesterday's paragraph) that in response to correspondence he and another Australian player arranged to make up a rink, which was entered in the name of Ure (Auckland), but on his arrival he was induced to skip the rink, which was the sole reason why the change was made (in the reports) to a V.B.A. rink, though originally entered as an Auckland one.' Harrison, though a Sydney ’resident (he is “Boomerang" on the Sydney “Referee’) is a member of a Victorian club. King (Hastings) forfeited his game in the post-section round of last evening to Findlay (Mount Eden) owing to the receipt of had news from home. ’ A verv fine game was witnessed on the Wellington green (in post-section play) last evening- between Duncan (Wellington) and. Clark (West End), the latter getting home by two points after a neek-nnd-neek contest. F. Laurenson (Linwood), an old member of the Wellington Club, is doing well in the pairs. His game against Ainger (Christchurch) in the first round of postsectim! plav was witnessed by n big “bank." After a keenly-contested game Laurenson managed to win by a single point. Wearne (Kelburn) had five wins in the rinks, not four, as chronicled in the results. A CORRECTION Mr. J. Woolf has made the following statement in connection with a paragraph in yesterday’s notes to the effect that he had. for some reason or other, defaulted and played lead for Aingers throughout Monday:—“Ainger's lead, Mr. Alec Dey." he stated, “met with serious injuries in a motor accident, narrowly escaping death, and is still in bed: my lead had to return to Christchurch for a few days on urgent business. Being members of one club we played together rather than there should be two defaults. The executive was duly informed of the position."
