RIOT AT PORT ADELAIDE

ATTACK ON VOLUNTEER WHARF WORKERS ONE MAN BADLY INJURED (Rec. January 14, 11.20 p.m.) Adelaide, January 14. A thousand waterside workers at Port Adelaide to-day rushed volunteers unloading the Mareeba during the “smoko.” The volunteers scrambled for the gangway, which broke. Fifteen fell on the wharf. They and the others climbed ropes, crossed over the Mareeba, and jumped into ketches bn the other side. Stones were thrown at them. One volunteer replied by firing four shots from a revolver. A hundred and fifty mounted police swooped down on the rioters, who then began to move towards the steamer Mannipa, where volunteers were attacked with stones and boots. The police used their batons freely, and scattered the men in all directions, many having to go to hospital. One volunteer, however, was badly injured, being brutally kicked when on the ground.
