OVERSEAS INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC
EXISTING PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES NO RELAXATION OF VIGILANCE Interviewed yesterday with reference to the influenza epidemic reported from overseas, the Minister of Health (Hon. A. J. Stallworthy) stated that an intelligence service, linking New Zealand by cable, wireless, and letter with all the larger countries and by means of the League of Nations with smaller countries, has been established. Reports, the Minister explained, were required from every ship’s master concerning sickness on the voyage to New Zealand, and a system obtains of medical inspection by the port health officers of incoming passengers and crews.'
The Minister commended most highly the excellent work being done by so many agencies in helping people who are suffering from economic stress to enjoy at least a measure of freshair holiday and sunshine. That was humanitarian work of a national value as it contributed to the standard of average public health, which' was the real wealth of the nation. However, the Department’s vigilance would not be relaxed regarding possible sources of danger and plans were ready to meet emergencies.
