VATICAN AND ITALY
SETTLEMENT OF OLD ESTRANGEMENT THE ROPE AS SOVEREIGN OF SMALL STATE ("Times" Cables.) (Rec. January 10, 5.35 p.m.) London, January 9. In view of the frequent and conflicting statements concerning a probable settlement of the fifty-eight-year-old estrangement between the Vatican and Italy, the “Daily News” Rome correspondent is endeavouring to ascertain the truth. He says the negotiations have undoubtedly reached a conclusive phase, enabling the Pope to rule as sovereign with a small State of 15,000 subjects.
Signor Mussolini’s latest speech in the Chamber of Deputies, announcing great events for the next Parliament, is interpreted as a hint at the epochmaking settlement. The Vatican negotiators were a lawyer, Signor Francesco Pacelli, brother of the Papal Nuncio in Berlin, on behalf of the Vatican, and Councillor Dominico Barone, on behalf of Italy. The latter died recently, after receiving the Pope's blessing. The negotiations were then practically complete, Signor Pacelli departing for Jerusalem.
