ST. PETER’S CHURCH

EXTENSIVE RENOVATIONS For the last two months workmen have been engaged in. painting and repairing St. Peter’s Church in Willis Street. The work of painting the tower has been commenced, and this will occupy some time, as the old paint has to.be burnt off and three new coats applied. Formerly the bells could not be rung in the correct manner owing to the tower swaying, but concrete foundations have been put in to rectify matters. It was found also that the wooden supports of the building had rotted badly, and it will now be necessary to cut these off a foot above the ground and replace them with concrete supports. The, work remaining to be done will require about another three weeks. The building is 52 years old. but it is expected that the painting and renovating will make it serviceable for another twenty years.
