BUTTER AND CHEESE DECEMBER GRADINGS. The figures of the Dairy Division of . the Department of Agriculture show that the salted butter graded for December, 1928, was 12,285 tons, and the unsalted 394 tons, a total of 12,079 tons, compared with 11,997 tons salted and ClB unsalted, a total of 12,615 tons for December, 1927—an increase of 0.5 per cent. For the five months ended December, 1928, the respective quantities were 42,053 . tons and 1040 tons, a total ,of 43.093, tons compared with 39,230 tons and 2258 tons, a total of 41,488 tons for the corresponding period of the preceding season, an increase of 5.3 per cent. The cheese graded ■ for December, . 1928, comprised:—White, 9237 tons; coloured, 4034 tons, a total of 13,271 tons, compared with 8201 tons white and 5271 tons coloured, a total of 12,532 tons for December, 1927, an increase of 5.8 per cent. The quantities for the five months ended December, 1928. were: White, 27,115 tons; coloured, 12,486 tons, a total of 39,601 tons, compared with 22,888 tons white and 12,221 tons coloured. a total of 35,109 tons, for the corre-sponding-period of the preceding season, an increase of .12.7 percent. . ■ Converting these figures into butter-fat equivalent, there is an increase of 7.41 per cent, in butter-fat production for the rive months as compared with the corresponding perlod-of-the -.1927-28 season. Stocks held in the various grading ports at 'December 31, 1928, were: Butter 5663 tons, cheese.-. 7498 tons, as compared with 7255 tons butter and 0058 tons cheese held on. December 31, 1927.

. The.-New .Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company Limited lias received the following cablegram .from Its . London house,’ under date January o:—“Butter: New Zealand choicest salted, 186 s. per cwti (183 s. to 184 s. per cwt.) ; small supplies, market firm. Cheese: Coloured 90s. (995.); white 945. (965.) ; market weak.” (Last week’s quotations -are given in parentheses.), . ■Amalgamated Dairies Limited have received their weekly- market report from London as follows:—‘Butter: Our prices unchanged; market firming up. Nothing now lower than-,1845.; anticipate further improvement shortly. Danish 1955. spot, 187 s. f.o.b. Deliveries New- Zealand 1376 tons, stock 2567. Retail prices unchanged. Cheese: White 955. to 965., coloured 98s. to 995. Market quiet; Canadian, white 108 s. to ,1125., coloured 106 s. to 110 s. Retail prices unchanged. Estimated stocks public stores end December all butters 3750 tons, compared 6500 last year. • Cheese, 150,000 boxes, 29.200 crates, compared 111,500 and 54,300. Montreal: 41 cents.”
