STOLE FROM BATHS
SNEAK THIEF SENT TO GAOL. "This is the clearest possible case,” said Mr. J. H. Salmon. SAI., .in the Magistrate's Court, on Saturday morning, after hearing evidence relative to a charge against Alphonse Bailleul, a shepherd, aged 28, of stealing a wristlet watch valued at £5, the property of Keith Albert Mallard. Accused, who was represented by Mr. F. B. Anyon, pleaded not guilty. A detective stated that on Friday afternoon accused was seen to go into a dressing shed at the Te Aro Baths. It was later discovered that the pockets of a bather’s clothes had been rifled, and that a wristlet watch had been stolen. The watch was subsequently found secreted under a seat.
The caretaker of the Te Aro Baths said that he had had accused under suspicion for some time, and that on Friday he saw him going through the pockets of a suit. A detective was sent for, and accused was questioned, but he denied the offence.
A sentence of six months’ imprisonmen was imposed.
