FASHION NOTES
This summer bathing costumes will be brightly coloured, but there will not be any attempt at “dazzle” effects. The suits will be close-fitting, with deep arm holes, and will give plenty of freedom to the limbs (says an Australian paper). The stripes will run around the body starting at the chest, and finishing at the waist. Most of the men’s costumes will have a background of blue. Apart from colours, there will be little difference between the men’s and women’s bathing suits. Last year women invaded the men’s stores in search of mannish costumes. As a result many delicate, pretty costumes were left on the shelves of the women’s stores. Most of the women’s stores, therefore, are not carrying large stocks this year, and the men’s stores are catering for the women’s bathing requirements. As a result of the great strides in the manufacture of bathing suits in Australia, outfitters state that they do not expect to sell many of the imported ones in the coming season.
A neiy shade, something that is neither grey nor beige, is grege; it is much used for afternoon dresses, as we have become a little tired of beige. Primrose yellow is also a favourite (states a writer in an exchange). Plenty of grey is being -worn. Naturally it is most becoming to grey-eyed girls. When blueeyed girls wear it, it tends to "knock out” tlie colour of their eyes, leaving them looking pale grey instead of blue. An all-grey ensemble always looks uainty and dignified. Sometimes the sole note of colour is introduced by jewellery. When one wears outfits of pale shades, naturally it is necessary to ‘ make up” to them. Frenchwomen learn the art of make up when still very young; and we have not their consummate skill. It is always safer to apply too little than too much. A girl with vivid natural colouring looks well in pale fawns, pinks or blues; but colourless girls do well to avoid such and to indulge in something brighter. To a pale girl I would say: “Discover what colour best suits you and wear them, irrespective of fashion’s whims. You will always look your best in your ‘own’ colour, whilst in a merely fashionable one you may contrive to look nondescript.” . .
