THE RACING WORLD

AUCKLAND MEETING CONTINUED BIG SLUMP IN TOTALISATOR FIGURES > PRINCIPAL RACES TO AUSSIE, PEGAWAY, AND NANCY LEE (By Telegraph—From “The Watcher.”) Auckland, December 28. Heavy rain marred the second day of the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting at Ellerslie to-day. The track was soft to begin with, and later heavy and holding. Under the circu ” s^" ce ® the racing was good and scratchings remarkably few. Pegaway scored a very comfortable victory in the principal event, the Summer Cup, from Bright Glow and Talisker and Nancy Lee won almost as well in The Electric Handicap from Billikins and Silvermine.’ The weather badly affected the attendance and there was another pronounced slump in totalisator returns. The amount handled during the day was compared wit £72,331 on the second day last year, a decrease of £28,020.

FERGUSON HANDICAP. The favourite Lunette, scored a comfortable victory in the opening event. Hakanoa, Amor, and Sir Mond made the pace from Lunette to the straight, where Arikitoa was most prominent of the others. Lunette hit the front entering the straight, and ’won easily by two lengths from Amor, who beat Sir Mond by half a length. Te Money, Hakanoa and Komak were well up. Amor had every chance, but the winner was too good. Te Money and Komak gave, the field a long start over the last half. Court Jester was prominent for three furlongs, and then dropped out. Sir Mond, au Australian-bred three-year-old by Seremoud, went out at a forlorn price, but ran a very good race. He has not had much experience yet, and looks a promising sort. KING'S PLATE. Aussie started a red-hot favourite in the weight-for-age race. Toxeuma showed out first, and slightly ahead of Aussie led up to the hill from Prodice and Lysander together. On the last bit of the rise and past the five furlongs Aussie headed off Toxeuma and they ran thus to the straight. In the run home Aussie beat Toxeuma by a long head, with Prodice half a length away, and Lysander beaten off. Aussie's winning margin was small, but it could have been substantial, for he was holding Toxeuma quite safely. Toxeuma is much improved and goes well in the ground. Prodice made up about two lengths in the run home, but she was not making much impression at the finish. She was eased off after her wins in the Avondale and Great Northern Guineas, in the spring, and those who have seen her recent form say she is improving. The first half-mile was run in 53sec. PONSONBY HURDLES. The hurdle race was a regular chapter of accidents. Royal Form slipped on landing over the second fence, and brought down Farndon ; Harbour View fell at the third fence, and at the next (the fence out of the straight). Ripon Abbey, the leader, tame down, and brought down Beaumont, who was going well in third place; at the same fence Wharncliffe, who was making up his leeway, concentrated all his interest in the falls ahead of him, with the result that he made no atttempt to clear the hurdle, and, crashing right through, fell heavily. This left only Karamu. Pouri. Clockwork, Lady Cintra, and Pekatahi standing up, and six furlongs from home Pouri and Karamu began to draw out, Pouri won by two lengths from Karamu, who beat Clockwork by four lengths. Glenotus, Lady Cintra. and Pekatahi finished at intervals. The falls spoiled the race. SUMMER HANDICAP. The Christmas Handicap winner, Pegaway, started a solid favourite for the Summer Handicap, and he won with ease. Talisker went out in front clear of the bunch, of which Cashier and Royal Doulton were the leaders. Bright Glow moved ip to a prominent position down the back, and at the half, Pegaway, who had oeen in the rear, commenced a run. Pegiway got a run on the rails, and led nto‘ the straight from Talisker and Bright Glow, and had no difficulty in naintajning his advantage, winning by a ength easing up from Bright Glow, who >eat Talisker by two lengths. Cashier, loyal Doulton, and Mithra were beaten iff. • . , It was a poor field for a rich stake, >ut the winner is a good horse, and. noreover, a champion in the heavy (round. CRITERION HANDICAP. First day’s form showed Eaglet and Ralston up so favourably that they caried the bulk of the money in the two-ear-old handicap. They were too good or their opponents, and Dalston was .ble to reverse positions with Eaglet in i close finish. The margin was only a lead, but Dalston’s rider is not so experi■nced as Goldfinch, or Dalston would have tvon more comfortably. He is a nice-look-ng chestnut colt by Chief Ruler; from he dam of Stormy, and gallops as well is he looks. None of the others had any •hanee. Imperial Prince being third, two engths away, with a big gap to Bennie. Awamutu and Currajong. WAITEMATA HANDICAP. There was a weak field of hacks in be Waitemata Handicap, aud in the going some of them stopped badly at the inish. Maori Boy, Salamander, Metellus, ind Cybele were the leaders to the straight. Once in line Metellus and Maori Bov began a struggle for supremacy, but over the last bit the outsider Valsier finished all over them and won by half a length, Metellus getting second money from Maori Boy by a head. Cybele, Good Bov. and Roynl Flower were next. Nassock and Bannock fell on the start of the new ground. Zefixis bolted a round, and 5 Tialf the reverse way in the preliminaries, and was withdrawn by permission ■* i ,f the stewards, the investments being » returned. ELECTRIC HANDICAP. The Railway Handicap winner. Nancy Lee, scored decisively again in the open sprint. Town Bird made the pace, the favourite, Kingfield. being last away. BilLikins ' attended Town Bird to the straight clear of the bunch, whieh_ was headed by Nancy Lee. Once in line Nancy Lee came on and won by a length from Billikins,' who beat Silvermine by a head. Town Bird was a poor fourth, and then came Lady’s Boy and Awarere. Silvermine drew the outer and could not reach a good early position under his iveight, but be finished very solidly. He -eturns home without racing again at the neeting. Nancy Lee was too nicely weighted .for anything to cause her serijus trouble. PLUNKET HANDICAP. King Lu, the .solid favourite in the •oucluding event, was beaten .a furloug rom the post. Tinokoa and Siosi made he pace till nearing the straight, where I'hursby and Hyde Park drew out, and n a battling finish they had the issue o themselves. Thursby winning by a cry short head. Golden Wedding was •ve lengths back, followed at intervals ■v Siaosi. King Lu and Tinokoa. " Hyde Park should have won, Thursby s rictory being largely due to the riding if Goldfinch, who is at present carrying ill before him.
