So that shunting opreations at the railway goods shed at Christchurch can be more expeditiously handled, the Department will install three electric capstans for hauling purposes at the sheds (states the “Sun”). The machinery has arrived, and has been unpacked, and the process of putting it into position at the corner of each sited will be started in the new year. One of the capstans is of 30 horsepower, and a haulage power of two tons; the other two each develop 23 horsepower. and are capable of hauling a ton and a half.
