SENT TO PRISON
EX-SOLICITOR’S THEFTS. The story of an ex-solicitor whose downfall was caused by drink was related in the Magistrate’s Court on Friday, when Erie Donald Ross, aged 29, admitted the theft of a travelling rug valued at £3, . the property of Samson Brothers, and of a suitcase, clothes and other articles of a total value of £l7 18s. fid., the property of Clarence Robert Russ. Chief-Detective Ward stated that the rug was taken from the doorway of a shop and subsequently sold to a dealer, while the suitcase and contents were taken from the passageway of an hotel, where they had been left by their owner. The case and contents were all sold. All the articles had been recovered with the exception of a razor. Ross, added Mr. Ward, was formerly a solicitor who had practised in Christchurch, but had been convicted for theft and forgery, for which he received a term of reformative detention. Since his release he had been over in Australia doing work as a journalist. Ho returned to Now Zealand about three weeks ago. Mr. O. C. Mazengarb, who apoeared for accused, said that his client, who had boon drinking, hod taken out a prohibition order against himself. The Magistrate (Mr. E. Page) said that licensed was a man who was well educated and one who hod had the warning of m-ovimis oonviefinns.
