TWO MEN DROWNED
SAILING BOAT CAPSIZES SURVIVOR’S DESPERATE SWIM Dominion Special Service. Auckland, December 23. Two lives were lost when a sailing boat containing three young men capsized in a choppy sea about half a mile off Leith, near Warkworth, this afternoon. The victims, both single men, were Vivian Maurice Donaldson, of Lower Matakana, aged 20, and Lala Brown, of Pakiri, aged 10. A third occupant of the boat, Trevor Taylor, of Leith, aged 10, was saved. He had a gruelling experience after the boat capsized, but with the aid of a paddle, used as a float, made the shore after a desperate half-mile swim. In a desire to try out the boat, a new craft, the three men left Leith, bound for Kawau, about 10 miles away, at 3 p.m,, and had gone only a mile when ,in an attempt to turn the boat, it capsized. Taylor said his 'two companions were clinging to the capsized boat when he last saw them. Both victims were well-known in the district.
