Some amusement was Caused at the prize-giving of the Invercargill High Schools by the exuberance of some of the youthful spirits who interrupted proceedings with lively hakas to greet the appearance on the stage to receive their s awards of popular figures in both boys’ and girls’ schools, (says the “Southland Times”). Early .in his opening speech, the chairman was at a loss to understand why he was not succeeding in holding the attention of his audience, bursts of laughter being occasioned by the lowering from above the proscenium of a turnip or some other vegetable to a short distance over his head. On perceiving the intruder, lie facetiously remarked that his hat had come loose.. The turnip made its awkward appearance several times later during the ceremony.
