MINING INDUSTRY
DECLINE IN NEW SOUTH WALES COAL BY-PRODUCTS WORKS PROPOSED Sydney. December 21. According to a report issued on behalf of the Government, tlie mining industry of New South Wales during the past year has been very unfavourable. Figures indicate that the production from the State mines and quarries, which exceeded £20,000.000 during the past two years, will result in a loss of about £2,500.000. This is attributed to the low prices ruling for lead. zinc, and tin. and the depressed condition of. the coal trade. At B est Maitland. Mr, Albert Holland, mining agent., was granted a suspension uf labour conditions on the leases at Ettaiong by the Warden’s Court. It is proposed to establish a coal by-pro-ducts works involving an expenditure of £.3.000.000. The operation will be carried out on a large scale. Mr. Holland said Hie projected scheme would be the salvation of the industry. The number of men employed, as a minimum. would be 1500 This would e.'i'-e tlie strain on the economic conditions now prevailing in tbo district.
