SANDERS CUP

CANTERBURY BOAT SELECTED Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, December' 20. The Sanders Cup Committee of the Canterbury Sailing and Power Boat Association at a meeting held last night selected the Lyttelton boat Colleen to defend the Sanders Cup for Canterbury at the contest to be sailed at Akaroa in February. Mr. Fred Morrison, of Redcliffs, will be skipper. The Colleen, which is owned by Mr. F. Dobbie, a Lyttelton yachtsman, is just a new boat and was launched a week before the trials. She was built by her owner, who spared nothing in an effort to make the boat quite as good as any in New Zealand. In the trials Colleen was sailed by Mr. 'Frank Collins and gained two wins. During the trials the Colleen demonstrated that she is a champion light weather boat, and her sailing qualities off the wind could only be equalled by Betty, the present holder and thrice winner of the cup. Morrisdn is regarded as one of the best yachtsmen on the estuary. During the last contest at Stewart Island he sailed in the Betty under George Andrews and was a member of the crew of the Linnet at the 1924 contest nt Auckland. AUCKLAND TRIAL FALLS THROUGH By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, December 20. The first of a series of trial races for 14ft. Jellicoe boats, arranged to take place this evening by the Auckland Yacht and Motor-boat Association, for the purpose of selecting the Auckland representative for the Sanders Cup contest, did not eventuate. The reason is not definitely known, but it is suggested that the proposal of the New Zealand Yacht Squadron that the age limit in future contests should be 21, has something to do with it; also, it is stated that there is resentment among some of those concerned at the decision that each member of the crew over 21 should pay £5 toward his expenses. The race was to have started off Princes Wharf, and a crowd waited on the wharf for three-quarters of an hour, but no boats appeared. Mr. C. G. Macindoe, owner of both Vai and Rona, later stated that his boats were ready to start if the third boat engaged, the Avalon, had put in an appearance.
