OBITUARY

MISS FLORA HODGES Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, December 20. The death occurred at an early hour this morning of Miss Flora Jamieson Wilson Hodges, aged 49, principal of the Palmerston North Girls’ High School. She was the daughter of Mrs. Flora Hodges, Maori Hill, Dunedin. Following a slight accident some time ago, Miss Hodge’s health declined, a serious condition being made worse by an attack of influenza, Passing the teachers’ D at Dunedin Training College, she held positions in primary schools in Dunedin. In 1901 she taught at Braemar House Private School, at Dunedin, and was appointed in 1902 to the position of second assistant mistress to the Napier Girls’ High School, remaining there until 1909. She then joined the stall of the Tiinaru Girls’ High School, rising to the position of first assistant in 1915. She was appointed principal of the New Plymouth Girls High School, but resigned to visit Groat Britain. On her return, she joined the Wellington Girls’ College teaching staff, and three years later was appointed first assistant mistress to Palmerston North Girls’ High School. In November, 1926, she was appointed principal. The late Miss Hodges held the highest grade teachers’ certificate. “She possessed a singularly fine character, and had endeared herself to all with whom she had come in contact,” said Mr. W. R. Binnie, chairman of the High School Board of Governors, this morning. “She had been associated with the school practically since its inception, was most efficient, and her work was valued very highly. The sad event proved to be most unexpected, and the Board of Governors extends its deepest sympathy to the members of her family in their bereavement. Deep regret at the passing of. Miss Hodges was expressed this morning by the Mayor (Mr. A. J. Graham), on behalf of the Palmerston North citizens. He statthat her work would be an influence for good, and an inspiration for the future.
