HANDWORK

INTERESTING DISPLAY CREDITABLE EFFORTS BY SPECIAL CLASSES An exhibition of handwork done by lh<: Hpcciul class pupils of the Dominion la ul present being shown in the Education Board offices in Mercer Street. Children are selected for these classes because they do not make ordinary progress in the ordinary subjects, but the handwork they have produced shows quite definitely that in manual ability at, least, they are not inferior. Visitors to the exhibition cannot but be impressed with the value of the work from an educational point of view. It must be understood that the aim of the exhibition is not to show the best efforts of the best pupils but to encourage every child by exhibiting at least one artele made by him, however crude it may appear. The value lies not in the result but in the effort put forth. Neverthe less the standard of work is very high indeed, and reflects great credit on the patience and skill of the teachers. The visitor cannot help observing what a variety of articles has been manufactured from one medium, in cane work, for instance, there is everything, from table mats to a clothes basket, wth every conceivable form of decorated cane work in between. Raffia work in all its varieties, woodwork, in abundance, paperwork, and needlework of every description. are to be found there. The show cards sent in by one class have received much attention, for it is almost impossible to believe that they are not the work of professionals. Another interesting exhibit is some specially beautiful rafiia slippers, made by a girl whose number sense was entirely omitted. One realises that making beautiful slippers must be an antidote for the humilation of being unable to do sums. Toys of remarkably fine worksmanship, made under the supervision of an expert, have been contributed by an Auckland class. Other exhibits are a farm project and a transportation project, both worked out with much ingenuity. The exhibition will be onen for the last time to-xluy, from 3to 5.30. It is a most attractive display to which all interested are invited.
