THIEVES ACTIVE

FURTHER BURGLARIES IN PALMERSTON Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, December 4. When late on. Sunday night or early on Monday morning burglars entered Mr. J. Christie’s tobacconist’s and hairdresser’s shop, 19 Rangitikei Street, a considerable amount of stock, as well as the safe, containing between £7O and £BO, was removed. Unable to open the front door, the thieves sawed a hole in a side door into the Indies’ saloon, and the slide bolt was drawn. The safe, weighing well over two hundred-weight, was wheeled out the front door and rempved. Indications are that there was more than one intruder. Mr. Christie was in the shop until late on Saturday night, llie thieves evidently knew the shop, as they cut a hole in the light boarding in the door just above the slide bolt. Abaut 4 a.m. this morning Mrs. G. McKenna, living at 44 Lombard Street, awoke to find a burglar going through her husband’s trousers. She was able to -et a good idea of the man’s appearance, and jumped out of bed. The burglar left in a hurry by way of the hack door, shutting doors after him. He vresumnblv did not wear boots, as his feet made no sound. Mr. McKenna had been out of work for some time, but his trousers contained 28s. and a few pence.
