THE RACING WORLD

■ I NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By

“The Watcher.”)

"Consent,” Levin.— Correspondents must send their names and addresses. lue information will be posted to you on compliance with this condition.

Acceptances for ail first day’s events at the annual meeting o£ the Woodville District Jockey Club, to be held on December 12 and 13, will close on 1 riday, at it p.m.

Nominations for the summer meeting of the Walrarapa Racing Club on January 1 and 2 will close on Friday, at 8 p.m. The Featherston Telegraph Oilice closes at 5 p.m.

Nominations for the summer meeting of the Marton Jockey Club on January 1 and 2 will close on Friday, at fl p.m.

Star Stranger will not run at Auckland, nor will he be seen out again for some time. He has been blistered and turned out for a spell. All the filling did not go out of the joint he Injured at Riccarton, so J. H. Jefferd decided to take no risks. The rest of the team will race at Woodville next week but they will have to show good form, otherwise the Auckland trip will be cancelled.

Perception arrived at Wellington by the Marama yesterday en route to Auckland, where he is to run in the Great Northern Derby. Also on the Marama was another three-year-old Clarendon, who has been in Sydney for some time. Clarendon later w-ent out to H. Telford’s Trentham stable, where he will remain in the meantime. Clarendon’s form in Sydney was a long way below expectations, but he may pick up in his native surroundings. Perception will leave for Auckland to-day.

Gold Dawn, who was just a bit unlucky that she did not win in her only start at Felldlng, Is a four-year-old sister to Bright Glow. Like the latter she races in the colours of Mr. H. Cleland, but whereas Bright Glow Is trained at Hawera by J. Fryer, Gold Dawn is under the care of W. F. Mantle at New Plymouth. Gold Dawn is a good solid-looking mare, after the stamp of Bright Glow and her form was very encouraging in view of the holiday racing.

Paltonu Is doing a slide in the handicaps. At Otaki he had 8.9, was dropped to 8.1 at Felldlng and is in at Woodville with 712. He finished on into fourth place at Felldlng, which was only his third race this season, and his first since Wanganui In September, so that he is now very favourably placed for an early success.. ... The Woodville Jockey Club’s summer meeting has always been looked on as a try-out for the big holiday events, such as the Auckland Cup and Railway and the Manawatu Cup, and it is quite possible that the winners of some of these events are concealed in the fields for the approaching meeting. The two-year-olds also are a likely-looking lot, some of them almost, if not quite, untried, and it is more than likely that It will well repay race-goers to watch the form shown there.

The turning track and short straight at Feilding did not suit the big longstriding Zlppor.

Several Trentham trained horses are booked for Woodville next week. H. Lorigan,»A. Goodman, H. Klngan, J. McLaughlin, J. W. Lowe, H. Telford, H. Pritchard, and Captain Gage Williams will all have teams at the meeting. H. Lorigan with five, Including Oratrlx and Concentrate, will have the largest team. It will also Include the untried gelding by Grandcourt from First Blow. This two-year-old gelding has grown Into a very nice sort and should not be long in making a return for his owner, the well-known AU Black, Mr. Quentin Donald, who is a welcome newcomer to the ranks of owners.

Decoy Bird, who has been a flat racing failure, is being schooled over hurdles at Trentham with A. Jenkins up. He has had Deluge (H. Godfrey) as a schooling mate and both geldings have been shaping satisfactorily. It is the present intention of the connections of both geldings to let them make their initial showing as jumpers at Woodville next week.

Silver Tray, who Is now trained by her owner at Trentham, has been entered for the Oamaru meeting and will probably make the trip South. Yesterday morning she galloped six furlongs with Australis.

Although Staghunter is a Railway Handicap candidate on Boxing Day and la in at the minimum weight, it is apparent from the work he Is getting that his particular mission In Auckland will be the Great Northern Derby. Yesterday morning he galloped seven furlongs, being picked up about the five by Shot Silk, Despite this disadvantage Staghunter held his mate comfortably at the finish and was in front at the end of a nice gallop. T. Green came to ride him in his work and Mr. Eric Riddlford was present to witness the gallop.

Oratrlx and Concentrate are now regularly working the reverse way at Trentham In view of Auckland erfgagements. Yesterday morning they worked strongly over seven furlongs. Both horses have Improved since they returned from the New Zealand Cup meeting—in fact, they have never looked better. Concentrate’s Improvement Is particularly noticeable.

A large amount of mixed sawdust and dirt has been put on the old tan track at Trentham with the result that It is now a much slower track for galloping than at any previous stage, although of course It provides good going for the horses.

When Gold Bag contested the Rongotea Hack. Handicap at Feilding on Saturday his saddle slipped right back and the apprentice finished up on the horse’s bare back with the saddle behind him. But for this mishap it is certain that Gold Bag would either have won or given Stanchion a much harder race.

Richfield is a good hack but he cannot begin. He looks a good proposition over a longer course.

The South Australian Jockey Club Committee disqualified for life J. Clark, an apprentice rider, for having used a battery on the horse Antoym at the Gawler races on October 24, states a Press Association message.
