“SCULLS"

Members of the various clubs are now training in earnest for the various club events, and crews are being picked for forthcoming regattas. Star Club. The following crews have been selected, to go into training with a view to representing the Star Boating Club this season, in outside regattas:— Senior Four: Cooke (s.). McLean 11, Williams, Gray; coach, Mr. Diehl. Junior Four: Thomas (s.), Field, Mullins, Leask; coach, Mr. McLean, I. Junior Pair: Thomas (s.), Field; coach, Mr. McLean. Maiden Four: Rees I (s.), Hinkley, Butler. Steele; coach, Mr. Diehl. Maiden Pair: Bees I (s.), Steele; coach, Mr. Diehl. Maiden Double .Sculls: : Moffat I (s.), Cudby; coach, Mr. McLean. Youths’ li’our: ' Comerford (s.), .Cullimore, Bell, Waddell II; coach, Mr. McLean. ' ' . ' Some difficulty has been experienced in selecting a • light-weight maiden : four crew, owing mainly to the >fact-that all the men availably to row in this class are as yet untried In regatta racing, and that all of them are, comparatively new to the sport itself. Two crews''have been asked to go into training in order to facilitate the task of the mutch committee in selecting a crew to represent the elub iu this dass. They are:-C. Webb (s.), Lincoln, De aney, W. Webb, and Taylor ,(s.), Kenne.tLF’ AXcNicol, 'Christophers. These crews win tram in hxed-seat boats under the guidance of Mr. D. Brooker, and will be expected to race against each other In these boats in about a week’s time. It may then be found necessary for them' to train tor a further fortnight in sliding-seat boats before the crew for Pieton «egatta is definitely announced. The crews already selected have commenced training -and all appear to be making rapid progress. It is hoped, and indeed expected, that with these crews the Star boating Club will this season- repeat the outstanding successes of the past two seasons. ; ■

! Club Races.—The importance of these races has not been overlooked in the re-' organisation consequent on the selection of the regatta crews, and the finals of the club junior fours (a race open only to | novices in the. club) provided some keen, albeit "hectic” racing. What the contestants lacked in style and finish was compensated by determination to put up a good showing, win or lose. Undoubtedly rowing is the sport for teaching young men how to take victory or defeat in a graceful and sportsmanlike manner. With so many contestants it is inevitable that many experience the disappointment of defeat after a heart-breaking race more often than the elation of victory. The junior fours was won by Barry, Gibbons, Hassall-and Petrie after an exciting race against Crornie, Moffatt 11, Lincoln, and E. G. Webb. Crews for the President’s .Fours (from which race all regatta wen have been debarred) are as follow:—Cromie, Gibbous, Farrington, and Robertson; Pryde, Giles I, Turner, and Holdsworth; Lambert, Greig, Martin, and E. G. Webb; Barry, Player, Petrie, Kinniburgh; Moffat 11, Cox, Thompson, Larkin I; Lulham, Samson 11, Samson I, Tansley, Whiteford, Rees II; Russell, Wyman, Murray,- Robinson. Emergencies: Calvert, Mahoney, ■ Lowe, Sansum, and McCarthy. - The first;.;heats are set down for December 5... ■ ~ I’etone Club. . . . . In the first round of the Donovan ’Fours/' rowed on Saturday afternoon, L. G. Duncan (st.), L. Bowater (bow), Alexander (2), Brasell (bow), beat J. Kenward’s crew by one length and a half. S. Burns (st.),. Smith ..(3), . Creagh. (2),--Tempest (bow), beat A. L. Warden’s crew by. half., a'length. A. Hickson (st.), D. Ileney- (S'); Prestige (2), Dudley (bow), beat A. Jones's crew by half a length. A. Fromont (st.), Kennedy, 0. Clark (2), Jack- Gaynor (bow), beat T. Slinn’s crew by half a length. K. Rodger (st.), G. Rodda (3), Kerridge- (2), Taylor (bow), -beat F. Cropp’s crew, by three-quarters of a length. In .the second round A. White (st,), G. Medhurst (3), Ainslie (2), Kells (bow), beat G. Villers’s crew by a canvas. G. Gardiner (st.), N, Dickeiis (3),.McGavin (2), Benge (bow), beat R. G. Duncan’s crew by one length and three-quarters. A. FrOmout’s crew beat K. Rodgers’s crew by half - a length. ; -.- The race, which is beiug continued during this week, produced record entries for the club, all the thirteen crews starting. The finishes of the various races were all good and some good form was shown by the novices. Those among the. new mem-_ bers who rowed well were Alexander, Prestige, J. Gaynor, McGavin. Among the new members this year Is Kennedy, late of Aramoho Club. He Is showing quite good form and should be an acquisition to the. maiden .class of oarsmen In the club. The half-yearly meeting of the .club Is to be held next Monday, and It Is hoped to announce the Malden Four,’ the Mist. Slaldeh Four, and Youths' Four for regattas. It is considered that the club will be able to produce some good crews in these classes.
