MAGISTRATE’S COURT
POLICE, BY-LAW, AND CIVIL CASES Police cases in the Magistrate’s Court, yesterday, were heard before Mr. W. G. Kiddell, S.M. Walter Anderson Waddle, a fireman and miner, aged 21, was fined 10s. on a charge of damaging a cell utensil, valued at 12s. 6d., and was ordered to make good the damage, in default, three days imprisonment. On a charge of drunkenness, he was convicted and discharged. Julia Ethel Sutherland, aged 65, was charged with being a rogue and vagabond, in that she had insufficient lawful means of support, having a previous conviction as an idle and disorderly person. It was stated that accused was to be seen dailv loitering on seats on the triangle, in front of the Parliament grounds. She was found in the tram shelter at the Botanical Gardens in the early hours of yesterday morning, and had only od. in her possession. The Magistrate sent her to prison for six months. On the application of Chief-Detective Ward, a remand until to-day was granted to William John Tonkin, a greaser, aged 30, who was charged with the theft of 501 b. of scrap brass, valued at 12s. 6d., the property of the Wellington City Council. Mr. Ward said that a number of similar charges would be preferred. BY-LAW CASES By-law cases were dealt with by Messrs. I. Salek and E. Mackenzie, J.P.’s. On charges of speeding, George, Godfrey, Ernest Tempest, Albert Walker, and Joseph Wilson, were each fined £l, and James Pointon, £2. Not having their vehicles properly lighted cost Arthur J. Curtis, Henry L. Hecc, Gerald P. Hendra, Maude McLeod, Frederick Sotham, and George Woodward, 10s. each; Julius Barron was ordered to pay 10s., costs only. Claude Mallard was fined 10s. for driving a motor-cycle in a dangerous manner. Earl H. Hogan was fined £1 for not having a driver’s license. For failing to keep to the left, Frederick Barrell was fined 10s. Leaving their vehicles unattended cost William H. J. Donovan. Percy J. Lee, and Percy E. Staple, 10s. each; Leonard O. Atkinson, 10s., costs only. For failing to stop on request, Charles B. Chapman was fined £l. Having a defective silencer on his motor-cycle cost Sydney Clark £l. . Victor Rinoldi was fined 10s. for driving in a negligent manner. John Williams Burtensbaw was fined £1 for driving in a manner dangerous to the public, and 10s. for not having a driver’s license. Parking his car at a tram stop, cost Joseph H. Williams 10s. Defence cases.—On charges of failing to attend drill, Reginald D. Austin was fined £3; Frank Freeman, Geoffrey W. Gill, Charles W. S.
