THE RACING WORLD
NOTES AND COMMENTS
(By
“The Watcher.”)
Bonogne was galloped on at Levin and was unable to show his best form at Otaki. Mr. G. J. Barton deserves success with Gold Tinge. Except for the short period after the New Zealand Cup meeting till he leaves for Auckland on Friday the Paper Money two-year-old and his trainer, C. G. Ware, have not been in home quarters since they left for Sydney last July. The Breeders' Plate was a good stake to win, but a fair slice must have been taken out in expenses to date. Partaga, who wrenched a joint and was unable to start at the New Zealand Cup meeting, is again in work at Hawera. T. Green will ride Chelone in the Flying Handicap at Feilding. Page Boy, who is winning in the south, is a seven-year-old who did not start bis racing career until last season. Two-year-olds have won the Feilding Stakes on only five occasions. This year’s field contains two of that age, Courtlike and Emotion, neither of whose chances can be seriously regarded. Avro has won four races at Otaki. Airtight and Monaghan both shaped like holiday winners at Otaki. First Sight got into all the trouble that was going in the Teschemaker Handicap on the opening day at Timaru, and his win was more impressive than the length he won by would seem to indicate. The Gay Lad gelding is at the top of his form and he should gather more stake money at some of the holiday meetings. As a yearling Joy Bird was purchased in England by the Wellington sportsman, Mr. W. Higgins, who gave 575 guineas for her,■'’but she has brought in a good return and has won £2545 to date, and looks likely to increase that total. Mr. P. D. McNab, who acted as starter’s assistant at the South Canterbury meeting last week, received a kick on the right thigh Tom Toawai at the starting of the Trial Handicap on Saturday. As a result he was very lame during the remainder of the day. Desert Song was the medium of solid wagering in his engagement at Timaru on Saturday, and his narrow defeat was the cause of much lamentation (says the “Press”). He did not have the best of passages and covered more ground than seemed necessary. He was with the leading division on the rails round ing the far turn, but allowed Captivate, who went to the front at the home bend to deprive him of his position, and it was then necessary to take him on the outside of the Grandcourt youngster. With the speed shown by Desert Song on the track he should have been able to keep the rails and save the action taken which eventually was the cause of his defeat. Some excuse could bo made for the two-year-old. as this was his second race and he ran very sreen His effort, however, was very creditable and there is no doubt that Dr. M. <■ Louisson will win good races with him later. Desert Song is engaged at M oodville. Owing to there being more horses engaged in the Aorangi Trial Plate at Ing than numbers on the totalisator. horses win be bracketed as follow: Ali Baba and Level Grattan and Irish Moss Snowshoe and The Warden. Elicit and Miss Atlanta. Mademoiselle and Broxt, T exillum and Jiu Jazz, Irish Court and War Zone. Xhe winner of each division will receive £7oand the club is adding £3O to be divided equally between the second horses in each division. The following weights will be carried In the FEILDING STAKES, of 500 sovs. Five furlongs. Paganelli (inc, 31b. Cimabue 9 0 penalty) ... 9 3 Royal Duke .. 8 2 The Hawk ..9 1 Emot on 0 6 Lysander .... 9 1 Courtlike .... 6 1 The Raider ..9 1 The three-year-old gelding Millais, by Leighton from Matty, arrived at Ellerslie on Saturday evening in charge of A. Lord. Millais, who is engaged in the lakapuna Plate on the opening day of the Takapuna meeting, is looking bright and muscular. It is probable that Mr. A. J. Hastings, well known as a trotting starter, will officiate as starter at the Ashburton County Racing Club’s meeting next month. Mr. Hastings has started the trotting events on the club's programmes for some time past. A gold cup valued at £lOO has been donated to the Wanganui Jockey Club by Mr. W. Kellick, of Mangamahu, to be presented to the owner of the winner of the Wanganui Cup of 1929. For the last thirty years the Wanganui Cup race has been run over a distance of a mile and three-quarters and it is reported that there Is a chance of it being reduced to a mile and a half. It is probable W. Rayner will take Mask, Lysander, Alloy, and Ceremony to Auckland at Christmas. The summer meeting of the Woodville District Jockey Club promises to be a good one from every viewpoint. There are no fewer than 409 nominations for the two days, an average of 25 per race. The handicaps for the first day will be declared on Monday, December 3, acceptances being due on the Friday following at 8 p.m. As Woodville is recognised as one of the best country courses in the Dominion, the club may anticipate a successful meeting. F. Tilley has a team of six engaged at the Auckland summer meeting, including Laughing Prince, Cashier, Metelius, High Falutin', Consent, and Glenartney. The latter is a two-year-old chestnut gelding by Hunting Song from Melodise, the dam of Agitato and Vivo. TAUMARUNUI HANDICAPS By Telegraph.—-Press Association. Auckland, November 27. First Sight was not nominated for any of the minor events at the Auckland Racing Club's summer meeting, as arrangements have been made to race him at the Manawatu meeting. F. D. Jones will also take other members of his team to that fixture. Including probably Toawai, Belcalre, and Loot. Sir Roy finished better than Front Rank and Court Jester in a gallop over six furlongs on the plough at Riccarton today. A. McCauiay contemplates a trip to Awapuni with Sir Roy and Nightmarch. Both have done well since the New Zealand Cup meeting. The four-year-old gelding Starflight sustained an injury on Saturday whilst running tn a paddock, but serious consequences are not anticipated. The stable controlled by G. Murray-Aynsley has certainly had an extraordinary run of illluck this season. Raider can be considered an unlikely visitor to the Auckland meeting, and will probably not be raced again until the Wellington summer meeting. Hoylake was given a useful gallop over a mile on the plough the reverse way at Riccarton this morning, Red Heckle accompanying him for the first six furlongs. The pair were together at the end of that distance, and Hoylake completed his task in 1.46. without being extended. Hoylake and Desert Song have been nominated for the Woodville meeting, to be held on December 12 and 13. and present intentions are to race the pair there prior to going on to Ellerslie. P. V. Mason’s team for the Auckland meeting will comprise Honour, Philippic, and Golden Armour. Up to the present there is every intention of sending Count Cavour to contest the Auckland Cup, and Wharncliffe will accompany him. Their stable mates Money Order and Amor have also been freely nominated for minor events. Chickwhent. who has been a big disappointment this season, has been put aside until the autumn. AUCKLAND NOTES TRAINING OPERATIONS AT ELLERSLIE Dominion Special Service. Auckland, November 27. Transformer returned to form at Te Kuiti, and he is now in favour for the Alison Cup. He certainly did his work well at Te Kuiti. Millais has reached Ellerslie to keep his Takapuna Plate engagement. He looks in good shape, but his work to-day was restricted to half a mile in 57see. Mint Leaf has been at Avondale since the Dargavllle meeting. E. George came north on Saturday to finish his Alison Cup preparation. A. Tinker was In great form at Te Kuiti, where he won four races, three of which were due primarily to splendid riding. He also trained Mervette, who won at all of her three outings. She is right at her best now, and should do still better. Bulolo was a little unlucky in the final race at Te Kuiti, In which he finished fast in third place. He will do still better, but his stablemate, Monetize, cut up badly, and seems to have trained right off. Stormy is another who appears stale. He was confidently backed on the first day, but did nothing right. S. Henderson was tried on him on Monday, when he ran even worse. He may require a little freshening up. The Lover strolled home In the Hack Cup, and he is fulfilling the good opinion formed of him. He will win good handicaps. In this race Leitrim showed fine speed, but raced like a non-stayer, and it Is unlikely that he wIU be tried over a distance again. Most- of the work at Ellerslie this morning was recorded on the course proper, and this track was in fine order. Corinax gave Lomint, War Officer, and Red Lion two lengths start, and beat them over seven furlongs, in Imin. 32 3-osec.— a fine effort. Red Lion’s saddle slipped, and he was eased at the finish. Corinax looks like being a solid favourite for the Alison Cup. Avoncourt, Eager Rose, and King Emerald all went freely over five furlongs in Imin. 7 3-ssec., upon which they could have improved. Gold Money moved pleasingly over halt a mile in 50 2-ssec. She Is very well. Golden Wedding, who is in rare buckle, ran away from Thursby over a mile in Imin. 48sec. Vallar showed his usual brilliancy in beating Palmares over five furlongs in 1 min. 5 4-ssec.
Taneriri and Double Mint, ridden out, tan seven furlongs in Imin. 33 4-osec. It was a good effort for maidens. Valisier, who is coming on nicely, ran away from Mon Star over six furlongs in Imin. 21 3-ssec. Modest Boy and Hyde Park both pleased over seven furlongs in Imin. 34sec. Hyde Park carried a big weight. He cannot miss a middle distance race with ordinary tuck. Lady’s Boy was too good for Knighttown over six furlongs in Imin. 22 3-ssec. The former is galloping consistently well. Gemlight and Praetor were not all out to run five furlongs in Imin. 10 l-ssec. Potoanul made friends by beating Mangaiti over a mile in Imin. 50sec. Sir Mond, Tea Money, and Winsome Boy, as well as many others, worked nicely on No. 2 grass. Most of the Waikato horses for Takapuna are expected to arrive to-day.

FORM AT A GLANCE “REFEREE’S” FUND OF INFORMATION In the Immediate future the Interest of race-goers will be centred in the Feildlng and Takapuna meetings which take place on Friday and Saturday next. As usual, “Referee” readers are provided in the current issue with the last word on form. “Carbine” reviews the card for the first day at Feilding, with recent running at Levlu and Otaki, to assist him, and the paper’s Auckland representative, "Spectator,” has some suggestions to offer with regard to Takapuna. “Carbine’s” budget of turf topics this week is unusually informative, the same writer also discusses the classics on the Auckland Racing Club’i summer programme, the general entries for which gathering are the subject of special reference by “Spectator.” Among the articles of interest to breeders is one from the pen of P. E. Baldwin, who deals with the ancestral line of Oratrix, winner of the last New Zealand Cup. Comment on the racing at Otaki, South Canterburj- and Te Kuiti Is another feature which should find favour. Lastly, there are the form-at-glance figures, which are as reliable as they- are complete. Full details, with sidelights, of the second day at Alexander Park and at Hutt Park on Saturday last, appear this week—-light-harness followers will want to analyse these reports. In addition, the possibilities for Forbury Park are discussed by the paper's Canterbury representative. The tennis section contains au article on the service which should prove instructive to beginners in the popular game. Boxing enthusiasts are well catered for, and there is much that will appeal to golfers in die space allotted to their sport. All in all, the Official Calendar maintains its high reputation iu the current number as the first sporting journal in the Dominion. In to-day’s paper the Railway Department advertise train arrangements and cheap fares to Feilding in connection with the race meeting on Friday and Saturday next.
