UPPER HUTT AFFAIRS

MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL. The Upper Hutt Borough Council met last night. There were present: The Mayor (Mr. P. Robertson) and Councillors T. R. Jameson. C. L. A. Spearman, A. Howell, J. Blewman, W. Greig, G. 11. Guthrie, J. K. Johnston, and J. O. Duff. A letter was received from the Railway Department stating that with reference to the council's recent acquisition of Maidstone Park, and the requests made by the Mayor in connection therewith, it had been arranged for the Department’s buses to run to the park on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, and on specal occasions when the passenger traffic necessitated it. With regard to the collection of entrance fee charges from picnic parties, the Department advised that amounts of 3d. for adults and lsd. for children up to 15 years would be added to railway fares when parties were conveyed by train. The usual commission of 2J per cent, would be charged on amounts collected on behalf of the council. Regret was expressed in the communication that as the provision of additional siding accommodation in order to permit trains to draw up nearer the park entrance would involve a heavy expenditure, the extension could not be proceeded with at the present moment. The danger of taking over roads in subdivided estates, by the council, immediately following on their completion, was criticised by Councillor T. R. Jameson, who stated' that it was customary to compel the contractor to maintain his roads for a period of three months after construction. In some instances, a road was simply ploughed up. and both sides scooped into the centre to give the necessary crown. It was decided, in future cases, that whore roads were taken over by the borough, the contractors should be required to maintain the surfaces for a period of three months.
