METHODIST SYNOD

CONCLUDING SESSIONS. Dominion Special Service. Levin, November 24. The Wellington District Methodist Synod concluded on Friday. The temperance and public morals committee’s recommendations were as fol l ow; _(1) The need of more real temperance work both among the joung and those further advanced in life; (2) the need of more Press publicity, during the months prior to the poll. The connexional tire insurance report disclosed new risks amounting to £15,555. Only two small claims had been received throughout the year. A discussion took place in regard to Sunday school and young people's work. Steady advance had been made in most departments, it was stated, and only a very few schools reported decreases, but on the whole an increase of 120 scholars, while improvement was shown in the average attendance. The Masterton Children’s Home report was presented by the Rev. J. Cocker (secretary-manager), and showed that 83 children have been admitted s.' '.ce the home was opened seven years ago. Of the 34 children remaining in the home, 30 had lost either one or both parents. The churches in the area had raised £334, a slight advance, on the amount of the previous year. Bequests received during the year included £250 from the estate of the late Miss Jackson, of I’etone, and £l5O under the will of the late Mr. Cox, of Opunake.

A special vote of thanks was accorded the Rev. J. Cocker for his painstaking work in the interests of the Masterton Home.

Under the heading of Church Welfare it was resolved that all circuit ministers in provincial towns where there are colleges and high schools, be urged to give special attention to the attendance of students at Methodist churches.

Great satisfaction was expressed with the advance made in four circuits, Hutt. Taita Trust, Knrori Trust and Kilbirnie-Hataitai Trust. The concluding'session was taken up fully with discussions on foreign missions. Methodist immigrants, capital and labour, naval and military chaplains, home missionaries’ retiring fund, deaconess's home in Christchurch, locaj preachers’ association, women’s missionary auxiliaries.

Many votes of thanks to host and hostess, with several others, concluded the gathering. The next Synod will he held at Wesley Church, Taranaki Street, Wellington.
