For some time past Councillor R. McKeen has been urging that Riddiford Street, one of the first main city roads, be permanently surfaced and brought up to the standard of surface of other city streets. Yesterday Councillor McKeen stated that he had been informed that the city engineer intended to make a start in the near future with the reconstruction of the surface on the eastern side of Riddiford Street from the Adelaide Road junction to the hospital, an area of 850 square yards. It was estimated that the cost of the work would be £llOO, and it was a question. Councillor McKeen remarked, whether the council should not consider the question of lifting the woodblocking and replacing it with bituminous surfacing. Wood-blocking would cost about 265. per square yard, whereas bituminous paving might be laid down for 9s. or 10s. per square yard.
