RHODES SCHOLARS CHOSEN

NONE FROM VICTORIA COLLEGE LAW AND MEDICAL STUDENTS The New Zealand Rhodes Scholars for 1929 are: — Mr. E. E. Bailey, LL.B. (Auckland). Mr. W. E. Henley (Otago). Yesterday morning, the Rhodes Scholarship Committee met at Government House to select the ' .-o scholars who will g,o to England from New Zealand in 1929. The Governor-General (S'- Charles Fergusson) presided and the others p-esen were Professor Macmillan Brown (Chancellor of the University of New Zealand), Professors I’ W. Sea-jar (chairn nn of the Academic Board), Sir Andrew Russell, Mr. C. M. Gilray, Professor Robertson, and Mr. E. T. Norris (Registrar of the University of New Zealand). Five aspirants for the honour were interviewed by the committee, but none of them represented Victoria University College, which did not make any nominations this year. The Honoured Pau-. Mr. Bailey is 21 years of age and received his secondary education at the Sacred Heart College, Auckland, of which he was dux in 1922 and 1923, when he gained a University National Scholarship. He gained the Auckland University College Premiums in Jurisprudence and Constitutional History in his first year there and two years later qualified as a solicitor. In 1927 he

completed his LL.B, degree, averaging 71 per cent, over the whole fourteen subjects, and this year was admitted as a barrister and solicitor. He Jins sat. for and hopes to gain his LL.M, degree before going to Oxford. He has taken a keen interest in the social life of the college and has shown debating prowess, being adjudged the best speaker at. the inter-University tournament, held here last Easter. He also gained his football “Blue” and was a member of the 'Varsity teams which went to Fiji. Mr. Henley, who is but one day older than his colleague, was educated at Napier and Wanganui, and in 1927 commenced the study of medicine at Otago University College. When 15 he

passed the Matriculation and Solicitors’ and Medical Preliminary Examinations and he became dux of Wanganui Collegiate School In 1926. The wideness of his interests is shown by the fact that he has won prizes in mathematics and science, Latin, French, English verse, and twice for essays upon the Polynesians. He was a member of the football fifteen for two years, won the school Fives championship, and repeated the. performance upon the rifle range. Besides being in the first cricket eleven in 1925 and 1926, he was placed in several athletic and swimming events, was runner-up for the heavy-weight boxing championship and represented the school at golf. He was" also the school librarian and a prefect when at Wanganui and finished up his secondary school career by winning the Marshall Memorial Exhibition

which goes to the one “who during his school life has most worthily upheld the best traditions of the English Public School boy in respect to honour, devotion to duty and personal efficiency.” His university career has been equally successful and he topped his class in four subjects last year. Intentions for Future. Mr. Bailey intends to pursue his legal studies and will apply for senior standing at Oxford, where he will proceed to honours. He also hopes to find time to study English, Latin and economics, and upon his return, will take an arts degree, and may also make an attempt to win a doctorate of law. Mr. Henley will continue his medical studies while at Oxford, and will take whatever course the authorities there may prescribe for him.
