NEW STEAMER LADY RODNEY. The Lady Rodney, the fourth of the fleet under construction for the Canadian National Steamships to be used in the Can-adian-West Indies service, was launched at Birkenhead (England) on October 31, and the Lady Somers, the fifth and final vessel will take the water from the same yard on November 28. The new vessels will operate from Canadian Atlantic ports to Bermuda, the Bahamas, and Jamaica. They are 438 feet iu length, with a gross tonnage of 7750 tons. The Lady Rodney and Lady Somers will carry first-class passengers, and will be specially equipped for the bauaua trade. THE LAST OF A TYPE. Just over a hundred years ago the first paddle steamer passed on her, lawful occasions over the short stretch of water between Brighton and Havre. She was uot the first paddle steamer to l>e employed ou a commercial service, for there existed even then, as there does to-day. a service maintained by the same type of ship between London and Margate, but she may be said to have been the first paddler on foreign service (states the ".Shipping World"). The first, practical steam paddle boat had. in 17SS. carried out her momentous maiden voyage on a .Scottish loch at the rate of five miles per hour, but her inventor, Patrick Miller, like most, dreamers, did not live to see his dream come true, for he died a broken-hearted matt. And now the last of the paddle steamers employed on a cross-Chaunel service Is to be broken up. She is the I’rineesse Clementine. belonging to the Belgian Government, of 1474 tons gross, built at the Cockerili yards in Hoboken 32 years ago. She has been employed ou the service between Hover and Ostend. It is fitting that some reference should be made to this passing of the last of her type. Paddle steamers were in point of fact only a link lu the chain of development between sail nnd steam, or oil. but they did, in spite of tlieir rapid passing, provide the missing link.
