FISHING AT TAUPO
IMPROVED CONDITIONS Mr. Frank Dyer, the honorary Consul for Greece in New Zealand, who has just returned from a fishing trip to Taupo, reports that rainbow trout show a marked improvement in condition, compared with this time last year. He is of the opinion that there is every prospect of a good time in store for anglers later in the year. Patrolling parties in launches, he says, are getting magnificent fish in the deeper waters, and fly fishermen are also doing well, but are somewhat hampered In wading into the lake, which is at least two or three feet higher than last season. Mr. Dyer has a good word to say for the Taupo Beautifying Society. “The residents are at last beginning to wake up to the fact that something should be done, especially about the wharf and in front of the post office, to tidy the place up, and great improvements have already been effected. Quite a considerable area in front of the post office has been fenced off and planted with shrubs and flowers, which are doing remarkably well.” In all his experience in the district, Mr. Dyer said he had never known the roads in better condition for motoring, and those contemplating a trip to Taupo during the holidays need not fear broken springs if ordinary precautions are taken. The graders, of which there are quite a number working, have done magnificent work on the pumice roads between Napier and Taupo, and Taupo and Rotorua. The latter road is now in particularly fine condition.
