MAGISTRATE’S COURT

Mr, J. H. Salmon, S.M., dealt with police cases in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. For committing a fifth breach of her prohibition order Annie Lund, a domestic, aged 54, was fined £3, iu default 14 days’ imprisonment. Accused, who had 33 prior convictions, was convicted and discharged for an offence of drunkenness. The Magistrate warned Lund that if she came befoi’e the Court again she would be sent to the inebriates’ island for a term.

A charge of stealing a tire valued at £5 13s. 3d., the property of Levin and Co., was preferred against Clifford Corrin, a labourer, aged 18, who also appeared for sentence on a charge of unlawfully, converting to his own use a motor-car valued at. £250, the property of the sumo firm. Cliief-Deteetive Ward stated that the car had been damaged to the extent of £4O. while it had also cost Levin and Co. £lO to have it brought to Wellington from the north. Accused had also obtained a quantity of benzine by false pretences, for which offence he had been fined £1 at Te Kuiti, where he was also fined for having uo driver’s license. For failing to pay the fine Corrin was now serving a term of 14 days’ imprisonment. Accused asked the Magistrate for probation. , ~ Mr. Salmon: You take a valuable car and misuse it in this way and then expect to be treated as you suggest. The offence is treated leniently, enough by the Legislature, for the maximum penaltv is only three months. This class, ot offence is a serious one and becoming prevalent. On the major charge Corrin was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour. On the theft charge be was sentenced to one month s imprisonment, the terms to be concurrent.
