In connection with the carnival that is to be held at Wellington from November 24 to December 8, inclusive, in aid of the War Memorial and National Art Gallery, the Railway Department is granting the issue of holiday excursion fares to Wellington (Thorndon or Lambton), and, in addition, organised parties if school children will be granted school picnic excursion fares during the period of the carnival. A fitter, W. E. Clemmens, of Bolton Street, Petone, was removed to the Public Hospital by the Free Ambulance shortly before noon yesterday suffering from severe burns, caused through a quantity of whitemetal he was handling splashing on his face.
Another of New Zealand’s pioneers passed away at Cambridge last Saturday, Mr. John Henry Charles Ludlow Braun, at the age of 88 years. Mr. Brann was born at Maidstone. Kent, England, and came out to New Zealand at the age of 19 years, landing at Wellington, from the old-time clipper sailing ship Gananogue. Not long after his arrival in the country he joined Mr. Toomath and was associated with him in the first collegiate school at Wellington Terrace. Whilst in Wellington deceased was married, his wife, who predeceased him 25 years ago, being Miss Lucy M. Woodward. In 1880 Mr. Brann linked up his fortune with the Wellington Education Board and was headmaster at Clareville and Carterton in the Wairarapa district. He remaincl with the Education Board until 1895, when he retired on account of ill-health. Following on his retirement he and his family resided in Wanganui, Napier, and Wairoa (Hawke’s Bay). About five years ago Mr. Brann went to Cambridge and took up residence with his daughters. Deceased is survived by one son. Mr. B. J. S. Brann, manager of the Shannon branch of the Bank of New Zealand, and three daughters, Mrs. W. H. Brabant (Auckland), Misses S. and G. Brann (Cambridge) ; also six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
